The Los Angeles Rams have spent plenty of time this offseason talking about their defensive line, and that conversation only figures to get louder if Aaron Donald officially returns to the NFL. But the move that helped push the Rams into clear Super Bowl favorite territory came at cornerback, where the team made a major bet on Trent McDuffie.
Los Angeles sent four draft picks to the Kansas City Chiefs, then locked McDuffie in with a $124 million contract extension. The Rams clearly believe he can help them slow down reigning Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba and any other elite receiver standing in their way this season.
And the way the Rams may use him could make the fit even more dangerous for opponents.
Albert Breer offered a look at how the coaching staff might deploy the two-time Super Bowl champion, and the comparison he drew will sound familiar to Rams fans. “It’s interesting hearing the Rams receivers gush over cornerback Trent McDuffie,” the senior NFL reporter wrote for Sports Illustrated.
“I had someone there tell me that they believe he’ll be the best defensive back in all of football this year. And part of that lies in the plan to deploy him, which won’t be unlike how the Rams moved defensive back Jalen Ramsey around years ago, to make sure he could impact the game in multiple ways.”
That is exactly the kind of role McDuffie appears built for. Ramsey, who helped bring a Lombardi Trophy to Los Angeles in the 2021-22 campaign, was used in a variety of ways during his three-and-a-half-year run with the team. McDuffie brings the same kind of versatility.
A 2023 First-Team All-Pro and 2024 Second-Team All-Pro, McDuffie is already established as a steady coverage corner. He also brings value against the run, can pressure the quarterback and has a knack for showing up in the biggest moments. Add in his instincts and big-game experience, and Sean McVay and defensive coordinator Chris Shula have the option to move him around the formation, lining him up wide or in the slot.
If that plan clicks, it could leave opposing play-callers with very few answers. The Rams have plenty of star power, but McDuffie is the newcomer who could end up shaping the whole defense.
