Week 1 brings a strange kind of spotlight to Thursday Night Football: the Rams and 49ers meeting in Australia, with Los Angeles laying 3.5 points in a neutral-site game that already has plenty of moving parts. It’s the second game of the 2026 NFL season, and the first NFL game ever played in Australia, which is enough to make the market take a hard look before kickoff.
Even with the unusual setting, oddsmakers have settled into a pretty consistent range. The Rams sit at -3.5 across the board, but several books said that number would climb if this were being played at SoFi Stadium. How much higher depends on the shop, and on how each book values home field for a Rams team that doesn’t always get a full traditional bump in Los Angeles against San Francisco.
At DraftKings, Johnny Avello said the line would probably be around four points in L.A. rather than much farther beyond that. “This is probably going to be a surprise to you, but I'd say around four, possibly 4.5, but probably four, which isn't much further than we are here on a neutral site,” Avello told Sports Illustrated.
He pointed to DraftKings’ power ratings, saying the Rams are about 3.5 points better than San Francisco and that L.A.’s home edge is only “maybe 1.5, two tops.” Against the 49ers, he added, that edge shrinks because of how well San Francisco’s fans travel.
Fanatics sees a bigger gap. Ty Gour said the Rams would be priced at 6.5 at home under current conditions, and possibly higher if Aaron Donald were in the lineup.
“Typically we equate home-field advantage to about three to four points depending on the venue,” Gour said. “And SoFi is pretty neutral as far as how much of a distinct advantage it is, being in a dome and being a rather new stadium.
So, we probably put it at about a 6.5 with everything currently as is.”
He also made Donald the biggest wildcard. “The one X-factor would be Aaron Donald.
We don't know if he would have played if this game was in LA. I'm inclined to believe that he may have, and this travel just may have been a little bit too much to go back into in your first game.
So, if he's in the lineup, that line likely shifts to the 7, possibly 7.5 range. As things currently stand, 6.5 would be probably where we'd price it.”
Caesars and BetMGM were closer in their estimates, both putting a Rams home number in the -4.5 to -5.5 range. Joey Feazel of Caesars said, “The Rams would be a -4.5 or -5.5 favorite if this game were played in Sofi Stadium,” while also noting that SoFi “becomes Santa Clara South when the 49ers come to town.” BetMGM’s Christian Cipollini gave the same general band and added, “L.A.’s home field advantage isn't very large in general.”
The travel setups have been one of the most unusual parts of the buildup. San Francisco went to Melbourne about a week early to get adjusted, while the Rams are planning a much shorter stay, spending less than 36 hours in Australia before kickoff. Despite that contrast, the books said they haven’t seen reason to move the spread because of it.
“It didn't,” Avello said when asked whether travel had affected the number. He said the teams had months to prepare and the game had been on the board for months as well.
“Our initial thoughts are that San Francisco getting there one week prior to kickoff was probably a better move. But maybe the Rams are onto something by getting there the day before.
So, honestly, we had no way to tell, but in all likelihood, we undoubtedly will after this game is over because it's something new for the existing database.”
FanDuel said it also left the spread alone. “We have not adjusted the spread because of the Rams and 49ers different travel plans,” a FanDuel trader told Sports Illustrated. “The existing research suggests that their two approaches are the best options, and we would only differentiate our approach to a line if a team arrived somewhere in the middle of what we’re seeing ahead of this game."
Gour said both clubs are leaning on sleep doctors and other planning to handle rest, and he doesn’t see a clear edge either way before the game begins. “Both these teams have sleep doctors on hand that are going to prescribe basically how the team should handle rest heading into this game, we don't view it as a distinct advantage for either squad,” he said.
Feazel thinks the bigger effect may show up in Week 2 rather than Thursday night. “There has not been a significant adjustment, if any, to the line due to the travel plans,” he said. “If anything, it makes more of an impact for Week 2, where I expect the Rams to be less affected than the 49ers, who will need more time to reacclimate to the United States than the Rams will.”
Donald did not travel with the Rams to Australia, as the team is giving the veteran defensive lineman more time to ramp up before he returns to game action. He has not played since 2023, and the Rams apparently didn’t want to throw him into such a demanding travel situation right away.
For now, the market remains steady. The Rams are still 3.5-point favorites at most books, and DraftKings said 70 percent of the spread bets are on Los Angeles heading into Thursday night.
