The Rams are laying 3.5 points against the 49ers in Week 1, but the bigger question hanging over that opener in Australia is whether Puka Nacua will be on the field at all.
NFL discipline for the Los Angeles receiver is still on the table after a turbulent offseason that included a civil lawsuit filed by a woman accusing him of battery and assault. The suit says Nacua allegedly bit the woman’s shoulder and made an antisemitic statement. The case is set for March 2028, though league action could come before then under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
That possibility has already made its way into the betting conversation. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said earlier this month on his podcast: “Cases that I believe are now being reviewed include that of the Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, who could potentially face discipline for some of the offseason headlines that accompanied him and some of those incidents last year with another woman,” Schefter said on his podcast earlier this month.
“What did and did not occur, we’ll leave that to the NFL to figure out what did and did not happen. But, it’s possible that when the Niners and Rams play in Australia, it’s within the realm of options that Puka does not play in that game.”
Schefter stopped short of saying Nacua will definitely miss the game, but the current line suggests the Rams are still respected even with uncertainty around their top receiver. DraftKings Sportsbook had Los Angeles as a 3.5-point favorite as of Aug. 27, a modest edge in a matchup between two teams expected to be in the NFC playoff mix. The Rams are also the favorite to win the Super Bowl, which helps explain why they could still be favored even if Nacua sits.
Any absence would be a major hit. Nacua played in 16 of the Rams’ 17 games last season and piled up 129 catches, 1,715 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 129 receptions led the league, his 1,715 receiving yards topped the NFL, and he finished third in Offensive Player of the Year voting after averaging more than 107 yards per game.
For now, though, there’s still no ruling, and the opener is only two weeks away. The NFL could wait until next season to make a decision, or it could decide not to suspend Nacua at all as it continues to review the matter.
