Rams Eye Extension for Unexpected Player from 2023 Rookie Class

Could the Rams' unlikely extension choice be their secret weapon for the future?

Who’s next in line for a contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams? The 2023 rookie class is now in the spotlight, eligible for those lucrative NFL deals. This class was a treasure trove of talent, exceeding expectations and making a significant impact on the field.

Could it be the dynamic wide receiver Puka Nacua? Or maybe Kobie Turner, known as The Conductor?

Interior offensive lineman Steve Avila is also a strong contender. And let's not overlook one of the league's top pass rushers, outside linebacker Byron Young.

However, NFL analyst Tony Pauline suggests the Rams might prioritize offensive tackle Warren McClendon Jr. for an extension. It's a logical move.

Pauline had a good read on the team before they extended defensive back Quentin Lake, and his reasoning here is sound. Locking in McClendon after a solid rookie season is a smart financial move.

While questions remain about his ability to start all 17 games, his performance has been impressive.

McClendon entered 2025 as the Rams' swing tackle, capable of handling both left and right tackle duties. But he emerged as a standout in training camp, surpassing veterans like David Quessenberry and DJ Humphries to earn a starting role.

Now, general manager Les Snead has a prime opportunity to secure McClendon on a favorable deal. Offensive line coach Ryan Wendell deserves credit for preparing his players for the season, with McClendon anchoring the right side after veteran Rob Havenstein's injury.

Despite a promising crop of rookie right tackles, McClendon's proven abilities might allow Snead to bypass the tackle market in the upcoming draft-provided McClendon agrees to a reasonable extension.

For McClendon, a fifth-round pick, an early extension offers job and financial security, rewarding his performance. The coaching staff has been impressed, and McClendon has effectively earned a promotion.

The Rams’ next task is to find a new swing tackle for the 2026 season. Tony Pauline was spot-on with the Quentin Lake extension. We’ll see if his latest prediction about McClendon holds true.
