The Rams got a timely defensive lift for Monday night’s game against the Bills: safety Quentin Lake is active after carrying a questionable tag into the final injury report.
Lake’s week started with missed practices on Thursday and Friday because of a hip injury, then he returned as a limited participant on Saturday. By the time Sean McVay addressed the situation, the Rams coach sounded encouraged.
“I feel like he's turning in the right direction and feels good so that's a positive for us.”
McVay had already framed the issue as minor, and the Rams clearly opted to be careful with a player who has been on the field for every defensive snap this season. “We're just being smart with him,” said McVay this week as Lake missed practice.
“He's played so many snaps. We just wanted to be smart.”
That caution makes sense given how much Lake means to Los Angeles’ scheme. His ability to move around the formation is a big reason the Rams can lean into the multiple-safety looks that defensive coordinator Chris Shula likes to deploy. According to Pro Football Focus, Lake has lined up for 67 snaps in the box, 71 at free safety and 41 in the slot, which gives Shula the freedom to keep Kam Curl, Kam Kinchens and Lake on the field together.
The production has matched the role. Through four weeks, Lake ranked second among safeties in impact plays with 12, according to Sumer Sports, and led all safeties with seven pass breakups.
He’s also allowed 4.2 yards per target in coverage, good for 10th. Heading into Week 4, he was the highest-graded safety by Pro Football Focus with an overall defensive grade of 91.1, and his 92.7 coverage grade topped the position as well.
The Rams will need all of that versatility against Josh Allen and the Bills. Cornerback Jaylen Watson is also expected back after missing last week with a dislocated shoulder, giving the secondary another piece as it tries to handle Buffalo’s passing game.
Los Angeles does have a few absences on Monday night. CJ Daniels, tight end Max Klare, offensive lineman Bill Murray and defensive lineman Larrell Murchison are inactive. Quarterback Ty Simpson is also inactive, though he will serve as the emergency third quarterback.
With Lake back in the lineup, the Rams get a defense that can stay closer to its preferred structure against one of the league’s most difficult quarterbacks.

Rams Trade Deadline Picture Is Starting To Get Very Interesting
Les Snead has never been shy about making moves when the moment calls for it, and after an aggressive offseason, the Rams are again being linked to the NFL trade deadline conversation. The early read is that Los Angeles could have options if it wants to keep pressing its advantage, with the Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals all mentioned as teams whose recent struggles and roster situations could make them willing to listen.
What makes this especially intriguing is the range of paths those teams could take, from trying to steady things in the short term to leaning into a broader reset. If any of them decide to rebuild, the Rams could find themselves exploring players who suddenly become available, giving Snead another chance to add help before the deadline closes. [Read more 🡒]
Rams Suddenly Have A Trade Opportunity Fans Need To Watch
Week 5 brought a few useful results for the Rams, even before they take care of their own business. Chicagos loss to Green Bay helped trim down one NFC contender, San Franciscos win over Seattle kept the division race crowded, and Denvers upset of the Chargers added another wrinkle to the conference picture. For a Rams team sitting in the middle of the playoff chase, those games mattered because every break around the league can change how realistic the path to January looks.
The Chargers stumble is also worth monitoring for another reason: it could push them toward some difficult decisions before the trade deadline. If Los Angeles decides to sell, the Rams may have reason to explore the market, especially with interest in certain players from the Chargers already part of the conversation. The deadline is still ahead, but the combination of standings pressure and a shifting AFC West landscape has created a situation Rams fans will want to keep an eye on. [Read more 🡒]
Sean McVay Just Gave Rams Fans Little Clarity On Myles Garrett
Sean McVay had a little housekeeping to do this week, first addressing the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone after he wound up too close to the field and ran into an official. The Rams also learned linebacker Nate Landman was fined $11,111 for unnecessary roughness, a reminder that even as the focus shifts from one week to the next, the league office still finds its way into the conversation.
The bigger question, of course, is what comes next for Myles Garrett, who remains on injured reserve after knee surgery. McVay said he had no new information on the defensive ends status and suggested the Rams likely will not open Garretts practice window next week, leaving his return timeline just as uncertain as it was before the update.
