George Kittle is moving closer to a Week 1 return, and the 49ers are taking him with them to Australia.
San Francisco’s star tight end, who tore his Achilles late last season, is now trending toward playing in the opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne on Sept. 10. On Wednesday, reports said Kittle will make the trip after putting together two straight positive days of practice.
“The 49ers leave today for their game vs the Rams in Australia, and star TE George Kittle will make the trip after 2 positive days of practice, sources say. Kittle is trending in the right direction to play.
DE Nick Bosa, ramping up with his knee, will also make the trip.” ESPN’s Ian Rapoport reported on X.
That is a major step for Kittle, whose recovery has been one of the most closely watched storylines of the 49ers’ preseason. He suffered the injury on Jan. 11 in San Francisco’s playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles, and the usual timeline for an Achilles tear is far longer than what he is chasing here.
Kittle has been aiming for a much quicker comeback from the start. He had surgery just three days after the injury, and the tear was reportedly high near his soleus, which gave him a better outlook than many Achilles cases.
If he gets on the field against the Rams, Kittle would be back in less than eight months. That would put him well ahead of the standard recovery window and make this one of the most aggressive returns from an Achilles injury in recent NFL history.
The encouraging signs have already included his return to practice after being activated from the PUP list. Now the 49ers are bringing him to Australia, and the final test is simply getting through the rest of the week without any setbacks.
