The New York Giants are heading into “Monday Night Football” with a hole they didn’t want to open. Starting cornerback Paulson Adebo is being placed on injured reserve because of a knee injury, and head coach John Harbaugh made the move public Friday before the team’s trip to Los Angeles to face the Rams.
Harbaugh tried to offer a bit of relief on the timeline, saying the issue is not expected to drag on for the rest of the season.
“Not a long-term knee issue, but one that's going to keep him out for a few weeks,” Harbaugh said.
That still leaves the Giants without one of their top corners for a stretch, and it comes with a little extra frustration because Adebo has already been managing nagging problems since training camp. Harbaugh said Friday that the team is focused on getting him back to the level they know he can still reach.
“He's fully capable of playing at a high level,” Harbaugh said. “I mean, you know, he's a top-level corner, so you want him playing at a top level.”
For now, though, that return will have to wait.
The timing is especially rough because the Giants’ cornerback depth is already being tested. Deonte Banks is also dealing with an injury, and Harbaugh described him as “day-to-day” while saying the team will monitor how things develop.
So even after a win over the Dallas Cowboys, New York suddenly has a more complicated picture in the secondary. The trip to the Rams already looked like a tough assignment. Doing it without Adebo makes it tougher, and the Giants now have only a couple of days to sort out what their defensive backfield will look like on Monday night.
