The Los Angeles Rams had a rough Week 1, and that made the job of sorting out extension candidates even tougher. When a team is staring at roughly two dozen pending free agents and a limited amount of salary cap space, every strong performance matters.
Some players are going to get paid elsewhere. That’s just the reality of it.
Still, even in a miserable loss, a few Rams stood out, especially up front.
Kobie Turner was one of the few bright spots. The defensive lineman known as The Conductor let his play speak for itself, finishing with seven tackles across 43 defensive snaps.
More importantly, he was consistently in the right spot. He didn’t have to be loud about it.
Turner just showed up and made plays, and that kind of steady presence matters for a defense that expects Aaron Donald back.
Steve Avila may have turned in the best outing of the group. The left guard posted a PFF grade of 84.9 and came out firing in the 2026 season opener.
Unlike earlier seasons when he started slowly, Avila was strong right away. He was especially good in the run game, even if his pass blocking wasn’t as dominant.
Center Coleman Shelton also held up well. At 83.2, his PFF grade reflected another productive day, and his run blocking continued to stand out. He helped open lanes for Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, and while he wasn’t as sharp in pass protection, the Rams still kept the line from giving up a sack.
Puka Nacua gets an honorable mention, even if this wasn’t one of his cleanest games. He caught five of nine targets for 74 yards, including a 41-yard grab.
In a passing attack that struggled, he was the one dependable option. His 55.6 percent catch rate wasn’t eye-popping, but he still helped put the Rams in position to score.
The bigger issue was Matthew Stafford. If the quarterback is off, the receivers can only do so much. Nacua did enough to keep the offense moving, but one touchdown is not nearly enough for a unit that needs more attention.
If the Rams don’t turn things around quickly, plenty of these players could be looking for new homes in 2027. For now, though, a few at least answered the bell in Week 1. The hope is that more of them do the same in Week 2.

The appeal comes with an obvious catch. Hill is working back from a knee injury suffered in 2025, and his agent has indicated a possible return around October, which means any team chasing him has to balance upside with uncertainty. For the Rams, who are sitting on strong Super Bowl odds, the question is whether the potential payoff of adding Hill is worth the injury concern and the volatility that has long been part of his game. San Franciscos Week 1 injury fallout reached the receiver room quickly, as DeZhaun Stribling was moved to injured reserve after hurting his left ankle against the Rams. To help fill the gap, the 49ers promoted KhaDarel Hodge from the practice squad to the active roster, a move that gives them another veteran option as they sort through the early-season depth chart.
Hodge is familiar to Rams fans, and his return to the NFC West adds a little extra familiarity to a situation that already changed fast after the opener.
