Poona Ford’s rough debut for the Los Angeles Rams could have set off alarm bells about the run defense. Instead, Week 2 told a very different story.
Against the New York Giants, Ford and the Rams front slammed the door on the ground game, holding New York to just 52 yards on 21 carries. That came out to fewer than 2.5 yards per rush, a sharp drop from the Giants’ Week 1 output of 165 yards and a touchdown on 37 carries against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants were forced to lean on the run after quarterback Jaxson Dart was injured early against LA, but that plan never got off the ground. Even with Aaron Donald drawing the kind of attention that usually opens things up elsewhere, the Rams were ready for it.
Ford was the difference. When the Giants tried to double-team Donald, Ford worked to shut down the middle and steer rushing lanes toward waiting defenders. The result was a defense that made New York pay for trying to account for Donald up front.
That’s where Ford’s value really shows up. With Donald back in the rotation, Ford, Kobie Turner, and even Braden Fiske all benefit from the extra attention Donald commands.
If offensive lines want to load up on No. 99, LA finally has other defenders who can punish them for it.
Ford is one of them.
The contrast with Week 1 was obvious. In the opener, Ford was overwhelmed by double teams.
Against the Giants, he was the one doing the smothering. His 5-foot-11 frame may look small on paper, but it brings real power and a low center of gravity that was on full display on Monday Night Football.
Donald still had to deal with plenty of blockers in his first game back, but this time he wasn’t carrying the front alone. Ford, Fiske, and Turner were active all game, giving the Rams a deep and disruptive line. Even without Myles Garrett, that group is loaded.
The pairing works because the skill sets fit so cleanly. Donald is the quick, explosive force who lives in the backfield.
Ford is the steady anchor at the line of scrimmage. If Donald doesn’t finish the play in the run game, Ford is right there to clean it up for little or no gain.
It was only their first game together, but it already looked like the Rams have something that can cause problems for a lot of offenses.
