Matthew Stafford’s walk off the field in Denver turned into the kind of postgame clip the internet latches onto fast.
After the Los Angeles Rams’ 30-26 loss to the Broncos on Sunday night, footage from the tunnel showed Stafford appearing to spit as he headed out of Empower Field. Some viewers immediately zeroed in on the 5280 sign inside the stadium and claimed the quarterback had aimed at it.
The reaction was instant. Denver’s 5280 sign carries local meaning as a marker of the city’s mile-high elevation, and the clip quickly sparked debate about what Stafford was actually doing and where the spit landed, if anywhere.

There has been no official confirmation that Stafford was aiming at, or hit, the sign. The video itself does not make the landing spot clear.
The scene came after a rough finish for the Rams, who had built a 16-0 halftime lead before the Broncos stormed back. Stafford finished with 390 passing yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions. One of those was a pick-six by Talanoa Hufanga, and that score gave him the NFL record for career pick-sixes.
Bo Nix helped drive Denver’s second-half comeback, and Hufanga later added a late end-zone interception to help seal the win.
The game also produced another viral moment when a Rams water boy drew attention on the field, but Stafford’s tunnel exit ended up becoming the bigger storyline overnight. Broncos fans called the moment classless no matter what he was actually aiming at, and Stafford has not publicly addressed the clip.
