Kelly Stafford has stepped into the Sydney Sweeney backlash, and she did it without naming Sweeney at all.
The Rams quarterback’s wife amplified a message about how young girls learn to measure attention, appearance and value, a theme that landed especially hard given that she and Matthew Stafford have four daughters together. Stafford reshared an Instagram video from fitness influencer Daniel Hong, who talked about the pressures girls face as they grow up in a world built around visibility.
“My girls are going to grow up in a world where they’re going to learn really quick that attention has value, especially for girls,” Hong said in the clip. “Appearance can get you attention: likes, comments, followers, money, opportunities. All of that is very real.”
Hong then drew the line he said he wants his own daughters to understand early. “What I want them to understand is that attention and value are not the same thing,” he said.
Stafford’s response was short and emphatic: “THIS THIS THIS THIS,” which was caught by US Magazine.
Her post came amid the growing reaction to Sweeney’s new ad campaign with sports prediction platform Novig. The “Just Sports” spot used strategically placed equipment to cover Sweeney throughout the minute-long ad, but it still drew sharp criticism from female athletes after it was released. Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus called it infuriating, and other competitors responded by sharing their own training photos as a pointed counter.
Sweeney has since pushed back by posting old ESPN magazine covers showing other athletes who posed nude for earlier editions, though she has not directly addressed Stafford’s comments.
The reaction also fits into Stafford’s habit of speaking openly about family and parenting. She has previously discussed concerns about her daughters growing up in the public eye, and she has continued to talk candidly this year on her podcast, including recent comments about her husband’s football future.
This isn’t the first time Stafford has found herself in the middle of public criticism, either. She recently faced backlash over her behavior at one of her daughters’ birthday parties.
