Jaylen Watson didn’t take long to notice what Matthew Stafford was doing at Rams camp.
The new Los Angeles cornerback, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal in March, is still settling into his next chapter after three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He arrives in Los Angeles with two Super Bowl titles, and now he’s trying to help a Rams team that came up short last season in the NFC Championship Game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Even with his eyes on defense, Watson couldn’t ignore Stafford’s touch on Tuesday, when the veteran quarterback dropped a clean throw to Davante Adams in training camp.
“NGL, I haven’t played a QB who (can) throw that peel like nine,” wrote Watson on X.
That’s a pretty strong endorsement from a player who spent three years around Patrick Mahomes, a quarterback many still view as the league’s best.
Watson’s post quickly set off a reaction from fans, with some defending Mahomes, others hyping Stafford, and a few reading more into the comment. One user replied, “You'll get a chance this season, gang,” while another wrote, “Saw him first game of the season in Nashville against the (Tennessee) Titans. Matthew Stafford is the best thrower of the football I've ever seen in my life,”
Others pushed back harder. “Don't forget who carried your a** to two Super Bowl wins,” one fan said, and another added, “Mahomes better throw 300 yards on Jaylen ‘Bum' Watson now,”

There was also a different take floating around the replies. “I think this (was) more of a shot at the league and the years (than) QBs he played against.
Nothing against Pat, but he's (Watson) giving props to a former No. 1 draft pick who threw a dot against the (Cleveland) Browns, and his shoulder came back out of place. He's vetted for sure,” wrote @KWavewolf.
Whether Watson meant to poke Kansas City or just tip his cap to Stafford, the comment clearly landed. And with the Rams set to open their preseason schedule against the Chiefs on August 15, the timing only adds another layer - even if it’s still unclear whether Watson and Mahomes will suit up.
