George Kittles Recovery Puts Early Pressure On Rams Week 1 Opener

George Kittle remains hopeful for his Week 1 comeback against the Rams despite challenges from both his injury and the 49ers' tight schedule.

George Kittle isn’t ruling out a Week 1 return, and for a 49ers summer that’s been heavy on bad news, that’s a welcome turn.

The veteran tight end said Sunday that he’s still in the mix to play against the Rams, which would come a day shy of eight months after he tore his Achilles in the playoffs. Kittle said the rehab has moved along well enough that he’s hitting top speeds and taking real steps toward getting back on the field.

“I have a chance,” Kittle told reporters on Sunday. “We're running around a lot, hitting top speeds.

Hopefully we're back in pads practicing sooner than later. Just trying to check the boxes and not be a dumb---.”

Kittle also said the 49ers are running into routes as part of his recovery and that he’s stayed optimistic throughout the process.

The calendar makes things tricky. San Francisco opens the season three days before most teams, and the club is set to travel to Australia eight days before the game.

That pushes the timeline forward on any decision, and Kittle said his status will likely be determined before the team leaves. If he’s not cleared, he won’t travel with the 49ers.

If Week 1 ends up being too soon, the early part of the schedule still gives Kittle some breathing room. San Francisco doesn’t play again until Sept. 20 against the Dolphins, which would give him more time before the team’s first game back in the United States.

The 49ers then face the Cardinals after the Australia trip and later get a Week 4 matchup with the Broncos, a game that could make sense as a target if Kittle and the team decide to stay cautious in September.

Kittle’s injury came in January, when he tore his Achilles in the 49ers’ wild-card round win over the Eagles. He was carted to the locker room and quickly ruled out for the season.

Achilles recoveries can move faster than ACL rehabs, but getting all the way back to form is a different challenge, especially with Kittle turning 33 in October. Even so, simply getting him back on the field would be a major lift for a team that has spent the summer dealing with one injury issue after another.

Chiefs Were On The Wrong End Of A Rams QB Statement

Ty Simpson gave the Rams exactly the kind of preseason debut that turns a routine August game into something worth filing away. In a 20-12 win over the Chiefs, the rookie looked comfortable from the start, driving a large share of Los Angeles offense and showing the kind of efficiency teams hope to see when they put a young quarterback on the field for the first time.

The performance also gives the Rams something to think about as they sort through the quarterback depth chart. Simpson handled the moment well and helped steady an offense that needed a clean showing, leaving the impression that his first NFL action may carry more weight than a typical preseason box score. Rams Roster Battle Got A Lot Tighter After The Preseason Opener

The Rams first preseason game against the Chiefs offered the first real look at how crowded this roster conversation is going to be. After one exhibition, the updated 53-man projection already has the usual mix of players who seem safely in, others hanging on the edge, and a few practice-squad types trying to stay in the mix as the team sorts out depth and injury questions across the roster.

Among the notable names, Ty Simpson and Dean Connors both gave the staff something to weigh in a hurry. Simpson showed enough in his preseason debut to keep the quarterback picture interesting, while Connors made his case with a busy night catching the ball and finding the end zone, even if he still looks like more of a developmental option than a firm roster answer. The next few weeks will determine whether those flashes translate into jobs or just make the final cuts a little harder to sort through. [Read more 🡒]

Bills May Have Found An Early-Season Weapon After D.J. Moores Debut

Ty Simpsons first preseason action drew a sharper look from Rams watchers than most August quarterback work tends to get, and not just because the rookie class is always under the microscope. Week 1 of the NFL preseason offered a quick snapshot of who looked ready to move up the depth chart and who still had work to do, with Simpson joining Buffalo wide receiver D.J. Moore and Cleveland wideout KC Concepcion among the players trending up after making noticeable plays.

For Los Angeles, Simpsons showing is the kind of development worth tracking as the preseason rolls on, especially with every snap helping separate real momentum from early noise. The same round of evaluations also knocked down a few notable names, including Tyrone Tracy, Tua Tagovailoa and Spencer Rattler, which only underscores how quickly perceptions can shift before the games start counting.
