George Kittle’s outlook for Week 1 keeps getting better, and the 49ers just made a roster move that only adds to the buzz.
San Francisco is set to open the season against the Los Angeles Rams, and there have been lingering questions about whether Kittle and Nick Bosa would be ready in time. Kittle’s issue is the one drawing the most attention after he tore his Achilles in the playoffs last season against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The good news for the 49ers came earlier in the week, when Kittle got a major update on his availability. He traveled with the team to Australia and appears to be moving in the right direction after two strong practice sessions.
“Kittle, who was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 23, is recovering from a torn right Achilles suffered during the Jan. 11 playoff win against the Philadelphia Eagles. He will make the trip after two positive days of practice and is trending in the right direction to play in the season opener, per sources,” ESPN wrote.
Then came Saturday’s move: San Francisco cut tight end Brayden Willis. That decision caught attention because of what it may say about Kittle’s status heading into the opener.
“The only thing worse than getting cut by an NFL team is getting cut* after *flying 16 hours to Australia, and that's exactly what happened to 49ers tight end Brayden Willis on Saturday. From a roster standpoint, the 49ers' decision to cut Willis is definitely an interesting one. Since Willis is a tight end, the move could signal that the team is extremely confident in George Kittle's chances of playing on Thursday night -- Friday morning in Melbourne -- against the Rams,” Breech wrote.
Kittle’s potential return would be a major boost for San Francisco’s offense. His status for the game remains a key question, and it’s still unclear whether the team will put any restrictions on him if he suits up.
Either way, the 49ers have to like where things stand. Getting Kittle back for the season opener would give them a huge lift as they try to start the year with a win over the Rams.
