The Washington Commanders were handed an unexpected roster shake-up Tuesday when cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was placed on the reserve/retired list, ending his NFL career.
“Placed CB Ahkello Witherspoon on the Reserve/Retired List,” the Commanders announced.
Washington also moved quickly to fill the opening, signing veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau to the offseason roster.

The retirement caught people off guard. Witherspoon had been on the field for practice Monday and was even working with the first-team defense during training camp. “Surprising because Witherspoon was performing really well in coverage in camp,” Martenzie Johnson of NOTUS Sports wrote.
Witherspoon is now the second Commanders player to retire since camp opened, joining linebacker and special teams ace Nick Bellore.
A nine-year veteran, Witherspoon arrived in Washington on a one-year, $1.4 million contract in free agency. He entered the league as a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and spent his first four seasons there before moving on to the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years and then the Los Angeles Rams for the last three seasons.
His strongest year came with the Rams in 2023, when he posted career bests in tackles with 52, interceptions with three, passes defensed with 14 and fumble recoveries with two.
Injuries had slowed him over the last two seasons, especially in 2025, when a broken clavicle limited him to six games.
For Washington, the timing adds another wrinkle to a secondary that already had some uncertainty. Witherspoon was not locked into a starting job, but he was in the mix for one and at the very least projected to play meaningful snaps.
Trey Amos is on the PUP list while recovering from a fractured fibula suffered last season. He should be ready for Week 1, though that has not been confirmed. On the other side, Mike Sainristil is expected to handle the spot opposite Amos, but there are still questions there.
With Witherspoon gone, the Commanders lose a useful insurance option and now have to look elsewhere for depth at cornerback.
