Tutu Atwell is back where his NFL career started.
On Thursday, the Dolphins sent Atwell to the Rams in exchange for running back Jarquez Hunter, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It’s another one-for-one swap in a league that has leaned into player-for-player trades more and more.
The move sends Atwell back to Los Angeles after he spent the first five years of his career there before signing a one-year deal with Miami in March. Across his five seasons with the Rams, Atwell has totaled 105 catches for 1,535 yards and five touchdowns, along with one rushing score.
Hunter is headed the other way after one season with the Rams. A 2025 fourth-round pick, he played in five games last year and didn’t record a carry, with Blake Corum and Kyren Williams handling the rushing work for a Los Angeles offense that ranked among the NFL’s best on the ground. Hunter did show something in the preseason last week, when he ran for 68 yards and a touchdown on 5.7 yards per carry.
For the Rams, the deal is about receiver depth. Puka Nacua and Davante Adams sit atop the depth chart, but Los Angeles could use another familiar piece behind them, especially with Adams missing time because of injury late last season.
Atwell knows Sean McVay’s offense well after five years in it, and that matters. The Rams also have Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield, Xavier Smith and rookie CJ Daniels, though the group is light on experience overall.
Los Angeles also leans heavily on its tight ends, famously leading the league in plays from 13-personnel last season.
There isn’t an Adams replacement or heir apparent on the roster, but Atwell gives the Rams a veteran option who already fits the system. They also pick up a player in Hunter who may not have made the roster anyway. For a Super Bowl favorite, it’s a fairly low-risk move as the team sharpens its roster before Sunday’s 53-man cutdown deadline.
Miami, meanwhile, has loaded up on receivers this offseason, adding Atwell and Jalen Tolbert in free agency and Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell in the draft. With roster cuts looming, Atwell no longer looked like a sure thing to stick. So the Dolphins moved him for Hunter, giving themselves a little backfield depth even though they don’t have a major need there.
At receiver, Miami has numbers, but not much proven production. At running back, the room is deeper than it needs to be. In the end, this fits the picture of a rebuilding year: a small roster shuffle that doesn’t really move the needle much either way.
