Mookie Betts won’t be making the White House trip with the Dodgers on July 23, and he says the reason is simple: he’d rather spend the day with his family.
Betts told the California Post that he most likely will stay home rather than join the team’s visit to Washington. His explanation was blunt.
“If I do [go], people are gonna hate me. If I don’t, people are gonna hate me,” he told the Post's Jack Harris. “So instead of trying to make everyone else happy, I’m gonna think about myself and my family.”
Betts added that his decision was not driven by politics, even though he expects it will be treated that way.
“people are gonna try to drag me into politics, just because I am who I am.”
The Dodgers confirmed Thursday that they will visit the White House on an off-day during a road trip that includes three-game series in Philadelphia and New York. The team also plans a Capitol Hill visit, and it framed both stops as part of a long-running tradition for championship clubs.
“As was the case one year ago, the Dodgers’ upcoming visits to the White House and Capitol Hill follow the longtime tradition of visits by other World Series champions. We appreciate these tributes in recognition of our back-to-back championships.”
This will not be the first time Betts has skipped a championship White House visit. He opted out of the Boston Red Sox’s visit in 2019.
He also knelt during the U.S. national anthem amid the George Floyd protests in 2020. Still, he did go with the Dodgers for White House visits in 2021 and 2025.
Betts said this one comes down to timing and family life.
“I’m not trying to make this a whole big deal,” Betts told Harris. “We just had a baby.
You don’t get many days off. They’re coming [on the road trip].
And just want to hang out with the fam. That’s really kind of it.
But people are gonna make it a whole bunch of other stuff.”
Utility player Kiké Hernández also gave a strong hint Thursday that he would not attend, replying to a comment on his Instagram account before deleting the words. He later said he would be on a rehab assignment and “probably wouldn’t have gone” anyway.
