Chiefs Eye Bold Move After Rams Trade Shakes Up Roster

With their secondary depleted after key departures, the Kansas City Chiefs are poised to potentially secure top draft talent to rebuild their defense.

The Kansas City Chiefs are facing a significant challenge in their secondary this offseason. The departure of All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, traded for four draft picks including the No. 29 overall in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, has left a noticeable gap. Adding to the shake-up, cornerback Jaylen Watson joined the Rams through free agency, and safety Bryan Cook signed with the Bengals.

In response, the Chiefs have made some strategic moves. They signed safety Alohi Gilman early in free agency and added nickel cornerback Kader Kohou, a promising acquisition. Yet, the need for a strong cornerback presence remains pressing.

Enter longtime draft analyst Todd McShay, who has weighed in with his latest mock draft for The Ringer. McShay projects the Chiefs will select former LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane with the No. 9 overall pick.

Delane is touted as the top cornerback in this draft class, known for his adept skills in both man and zone coverage. His football intelligence and readiness to start make him an attractive option for Kansas City, especially following the exits of McDuffie and Watson.

McShay also mentioned potential alternatives, including Jeremiyah Love, if available, or edge rushers like Rueben Bain Jr. or David Bailey. Offensive tackle Spencer Fano could also be on the Chiefs' radar.

However, the Chiefs’ recent signing of Kenneth Walker, the former Seattle Seahawks running back and reigning Super Bowl LIX MVP, suggests they might pass on Love. Walker's addition on a lucrative three-year deal indicates Kansas City's confidence in their running back position, likely making Love unavailable at No. 9.

With the No. 29 pick acquired from the McDuffie trade, McShay predicts the Chiefs will target former Illinois edge rusher Gabe Jacas, potentially bolstering their defensive front. As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on how the Chiefs address these pivotal roster needs.
