Byron Young spent part of the Rams’ off day on Tuesday, Aug. 4, giving more than 150 Los Angeles students a boost they could feel right away - and, he hoped, one they could remember long after the backpacks were gone.
The Pro Bowl outside linebacker visited Everest Value School, a TK-8 campus in Los Angeles, where he handed out new backpacks and helped provide meals for students, according to the team. But Young made clear that the real point of the visit went well beyond supplies.
“I always want to give back to the kids and the youth because they’re the future,” Byron Young told LAFB Network. “I want to be someone that they could look up to and say, ‘You know what? Whatever I want to be, I could achieve it.'”
That message carries extra weight because of the road Young took to get here.
After high school, he spent about a year and a half away from football, working at Burger King and Dollar General. A flyer for a tryout at Georgia Military College pulled him back toward the game, and his path eventually led him to Tennessee before the Rams made him a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
In May, Young returned to Tennessee to finish another chapter of that journey. He earned a degree in communication studies and became the first member of his family to graduate from college, something he described as one of his biggest accomplishments.
His football career has kept rising, too. Young put up a career-best 12 sacks in 2025, earned his first Pro Bowl nod and landed at No. 84 in the NFL Top 100.
Still, when the conversation turned to the students, Young focused less on the spotlight and more on what happens after he leaves. For him, the example matters just as much as the message.
“Just by showing up and practicing what I preach,” Young said. “Telling them the advice and actually doing the same thing.
In the long run, they could look up and say, ‘You know what? Byron did it this way.
He did that.'”
Young also said his agent recently told him about meeting a professional athlete when he was young, and how that brief moment stayed with him. That story hit home for Young, who said it reinforced how powerful a player’s presence can be for a child, even in a short encounter.
And the visit wasn’t one-sided. Young said students came up to him with pictures and kind notes, leaving him energized in return.
The biggest point he wanted to pass along was simple and direct: setbacks do not close the door on success.
“Don’t be afraid to make a mistake or fail,” Young said. “A lot of people look at failure as, ‘You lost, so you can’t be successful.’
Failure is a part of success. I guarantee you nobody in the world was successful without having some barriers to cross or some adversity.
“Adversity is part of success, and it’s beautiful. Just embrace that.”
The backpacks gave the students something useful for the start of school. Young’s visit gave them a story - and, he hopes, a model - to carry with them when their own path gets difficult.
