The Denver Broncos got more than a comeback win on Sunday. They also got a Monday update on J.K. Dobbins that points toward relief instead of a long absence.
Dobbins left Empower Field at Mile High late in the third quarter with a hamstring injury during Denver’s 20-13 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but a source told Tom Pelissero of The Ringer that the running back is “good” and still in line for Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. NBC Sports also carried the update.
Before exiting, Dobbins had 10 carries for 36 yards. He went to the medical tent after a 4-yard run, came back out with his helmet on, and never returned.
The Broncos listed him as questionable. Sean Payton later called it “a little hamstring” and said Dobbins was frustrated.
“We’ll see where it’s at,” the coach added.
That’s the encouraging part for Denver: the latest word suggests this is not shaping up as a multi-week issue. Still, the real test comes with practice participation this week. The Broncos are already dealing with another backfield concern, since RJ Harvey sat out Sunday with his own hamstring issue.
Even with the injury news hanging over the postgame, Denver had to scratch and claw for the win. The first half was rough going. The Broncos settled for a 20-yard Wil Lutz field goal after three failed runs from the 1-yard line, and Jacksonville carried a 10-3 lead into halftime thanks to a Bhayshul Tuten 1-yard touchdown and a Cam Little 44-yard field goal at the horn.
Little added a 23-yard kick early in the third to stretch the Jaguars’ lead to 13-3, but that was the last time Jacksonville would score. From there, Denver took control in front of 76,472 fans.
Riley Moss picked off Trevor Lawrence to jump-start the turnaround. Bo Nix then led a 64-yard drive in 10 plays and found Nate Adkins for a 7-yard touchdown that tied the game with 11:47 left.
Little later missed from 54 yards, and Jonah Coleman - the fourth-round rookie who stepped in for Dobbins - finished off the comeback with a 3-yard score with 7:21 remaining. Denver then drained the final 4:41.
The Broncos scored 17 straight after halftime and 14 in the fourth quarter. Nix finished 22 of 31 for 288 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The defense kept Lawrence in check, holding him to 189 yards and a 63.7 rating after he had carved up Denver last December.
One bright spot on offense was Jaylen Waddle, who caught eight passes for 138 yards after being quiet a week earlier in Kansas City. His 49-yard jump-ball catch helped set up the Broncos’ first-half field goal.
Payton said Monday there is “a lot ahead of us this week in regards to who our runners are going to be,” and Coleman made a strong case for a bigger role. He finished with 10 carries for 39 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, while also adding three catches.
For now, the key takeaway is simple: Dobbins’ Monday update is the best-case scenario after he left Sunday’s game. The Broncos still need the week to unfold before they know who will be available against the Rams, but the early signs are better than they could have been.
