Aaron Donald picked up right where he left off in his first game back after a two-year retirement, and the early numbers were loud enough on their own.
The Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman logged 32 snaps in his return, finishing with three tackles, one tackle for loss and one pressure. Solid on the surface. More impressive when you dig a little deeper.
Per Sumer Sports data, Donald posted the highest pass-rush win rate of any defensive tackle this season at 27.6 percent after just one game. ESPN’s Ben Solak also pointed to a 0.75-second get-off time, which ranked third in any game for a defensive tackle so far, according to Next Gen Stats.

That kind of burst is why the Rams have to feel good about what comes next. Donald was already that quick in his first live action since January 2024, and there’s a real chance he only gets sharper as his body adjusts again to the grind of game action.
There may be some soreness to work through after his first game in more than 32 months, and he could be a little slower next time out if that wear hits him harder during the week. He may need a game or two to settle back in physically.
Even so, he looked far from rusty while watching the offense move down the field from the sideline. And the Rams are giving him more help up front than he had in some previous seasons. Kobie Turner, Poona Ford and Braden Fiske can all take some pressure off on the interior.
Byron Young also gives Donald a strong edge-rushing partner. Young’s 12 sacks last season were more than Donald has ever gotten from a teammate.
That matters, especially with Myles Garrett sidelined for now. Without Garrett in the mix, offensive lines will still tilt toward Donald, but the workload should be more manageable than it was the last time he suited up in Blue and Yellow.
Garrett will return at some point. Until then, Donald should keep building back toward full speed, and the Rams probably won’t ask him to carry a heavy snap count right away. A small increase could come later.
Maybe none of this should be shocking. Donald retired in 2023 after earning his 10th Pro Bowl selection and eighth First-Team All-Pro nod.
He has won three Defensive Player of the Year awards, a club that includes only J.J. Watt and Lawrence Taylor.
He also owns the franchise sacks record with 20.5.
This isn’t a normal player, even by NFL standards. The sample is tiny, sure, but it still says plenty: after two years away, Donald came back and immediately looked like one of the best defensive tackles in football.
