Aaron Donald’s return to the Los Angeles Rams is starting to feel less like a wild idea and more like something the team is actively preparing for.
The retired defensive tackle, who stepped away in 2024, has taken another step toward possibly coming back after working out with the Rams again. His name showed up on the league’s player transaction list after he completed his second workout, and that only added to the sense that this is moving in the right direction.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said the process is still unfinished, but the momentum is real.
“Based on the transaction wire yesterday, Aaron Donald tried out for the Los Angeles Rams, which of course hilarious because if Aaron Donald wanted to try out for, I don't know, basically any team in the entire world, he would probably make it,” Rapoport said. “What happened again is Aaron Donald put on some helmets, put on some pads, and worked out for the Rams, wanting to see how his body acclimated.
“And the answer to your question about is it time, not yet,” he added.
Donald’s latest workout came after the Rams acquired Myles Garrett through a trade earlier this month, and his interest in returning has only grown since then. What Donald is really trying to determine now is how his body handles the workload. He wants to know he can still perform at his best before making any final call.
Rapoport said that’s the key issue behind the delay.
“The Rams have been very vocal about saying they do not have a time frame for Aaron Donald,” Rapoport said. “And it's not like there needs to be some move where they would say, ‘All right, well, if we get him, we then need to trade or cut this guy.
We need to make room for this guy. We need to figure out this salary.’
So, it has to be now... It has to be whenever Aaron Donald wants.”
“I think it's fair to say it is trending that way that he would likely play, but there's been no firm decision,” he said. “And as he continues to not just work out, but see how his body responds, then he is able to make a more informed decision about whether or not he wants to come out of retirement.”
Sean McVay has also made it clear the Rams are not rushing him. The team is still talking internally, but there’s no deadline hanging over Donald.
McVay said Donald has put himself in a spot where he can choose whether to return, but he still hasn’t fully crossed that line.
"He's put himself in a position to be able to say yes or no,” McVay told reporters [h/t the Los Angeles Times]. “I think he's earned that right to have clarity on that. We're not at that point quite yet."
Donald’s workout at the team’s Woodland Hills facility reportedly looked strong, which is only fueling the belief that this could happen. Still, the final answer depends on how he feels after pushing himself over several days and whether he believes he can meet the fitness standards required.
If Donald does decide to return, the Rams will also have to sort out the money. He signed a 3-year, $95 million extension in 2022, and one season worth $31.1 million remains on that deal.
