Aaron Donald’s return watch is getting real, and Sean McVay isn’t hiding his excitement.
The Rams coach said this week that Donald “looked outstanding” during a workout, according to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop, even though the star defensive tackle has not played in the NFL since 2023. McVay added, “Things are going in the right direction,” before making it clear the team still doesn’t have a final answer on whether Donald is ready to come back.
“He's feeling good, but we're not to where we are able to say whether or not he is or isn't ready to do it. But he's doing great and he looked outstanding as I think all of us would expect.”
Donald, a 10-time Pro Bowler and one of the most dominant defensive tackles ever, has been considering a comeback since the Rams acquired edge rusher Myles Garrett in a blockbuster trade this offseason. A source told PFT’s Mike Florio that Donald’s decision could come in the coming days.
McVay said the Rams are leaving the door open for the 35-year-old, but the call is Donald’s.
“He has earned the right to be able to say how he feels,” McVay explained. “I mean, I obviously saw the workout.
I've been seeing the things that he's been doing. He and I probably talk every day.
So it's one of those deals that if he wants to do it, we'd be excited about the possibility.”
Donald retired after a 10-season career that included three Defensive Player of the Year awards and 111 sacks.
