49ers Week 1 Win Looks Even Better As Rams Face Growing Heat

A 49ers insider questions the Rams' controversial decisions in Australia that may have derailed their NFL season, including risky play involving star defender Myles Garrett.

The Rams’ slow start to the 2026 season is bringing fresh heat on the way they handled Week 1, and one 49ers insider says Los Angeles helped create its own mess by flying late to Australia and then rolling out an injured Myles Garrett anyway.

Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard took aim at the Rams on Tuesday after their 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football dropped them to 2-3.

“I've gotta say it again, now with the Rams at 2-3: I'll never understand what they were doing flying in so late-and playing Myles Garrett after flying in so late-to Melbourne in Week 1. They're a very talented & smart team that f-ed up the start of the season with this, IMO.”

The Rams opened the year with a 27-7 loss to the 49ers at Melbourne Cricket Ground in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia, and Kawakami said he has been critical of the approach from the start.

“This is not hindsight. This is not trolling.

I think the Rams are a fantastic franchise. But I said back in Week 1 - actually I said it weeks before that, when the Rams' plan was known - that this was not how a serious team should approach the start of a season.”

Garrett’s role in that opener has only fueled the scrutiny. He had dealt with knee swelling during training camp, played 62% of the Rams’ defensive snaps against San Francisco, and did not record a tackle.

He later underwent surgery on his left knee and was placed on injured reserve Sept. 17.

The injury has left Los Angeles waiting on the player it acquired from the Cleveland Browns during the offseason. Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has only appeared in that Week 1 game so far.

Sean McVay said Saturday that Garrett was unlikely to have his 21-day practice window opened this week, so the timetable for his return remains unsettled.

San Francisco has gone in the opposite direction since beating the Rams in Melbourne. The 49ers are 5-0 and lead the NFC West, sitting ahead of the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, who are 3-2.

The 49ers will try to stay unbeaten Monday night against the Washington Commanders at 5:15 p.m. PT on ESPN and ABC.

The Rams return home with a chance to rebound Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals at 1:05 p.m. PT on Fox.

Peyton Manning Just Spotted A Simple Fix For The Rams Offense

For much of Sunday at SoFi Stadium, the Rams were getting a quarterback showcase the league circles back to anytime Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen share a field. The Bills brought the physical challenge, the Rams answered with a slim lead into the third quarter, and Stafford kept the offense moving with a steady mix of completions and enough balance to stay ahead in a tight game.

Peyton Manning, working the Manningcast with Eli, saw the Rams through the lens of a veteran passer and pointed to a simple fix: keep the passing game cleaner and less complicated. It was the kind of observation that lands because Los Angeles has enough talent to threaten defenses, but also enough moving parts that a little trimming can go a long way, especially in a game where every drive feels like it matters. Bills Win Over Rams Ended With An Ugly Scene Fans Wont Ignore

The postgame handshakes turned tense fast after Monday Night Football in Buffalo, when Rams tackle Alaric Jackson threw a punch at Bills defender Bradley Chubb during on-field interactions after the final whistle. Teammates from both sides rushed in to separate the players, turning a routine finish to the game into the kind of scene that lingers long after the broadcast ends.

For the Rams, it adds an unwelcome layer to a night already defined by a loss, because Jacksons role in the incident will now sit alongside his past legal troubles and prior NFL discipline. Whatever came before, the image of a player lashing out after the game is the sort of thing that tends to draw attention well beyond one evening in Orchard Park. [Read more 🡒]

Rams Just Made A Kicker Move They Couldnt Put Off

The Rams moved quickly after their overtime loss, turning to special teams with a personnel change they could not really wait on. Los Angeles released kicker Harrison Mevis and brought in Blake Grupe from the New York Jets practice squad, a swap that reflects just how much the kicking game has been hanging over this team in a tight season.

Mevis had struggled with field goal accuracy this year, and his blocked kick in the loss only sharpened the scrutiny. Grupe arrives with previous NFL experience, and the Rams are hoping the change can stabilize a part of the roster that has become too costly to ignore. [Read more 🡒]
