The San Francisco 49ers are turning to another familiar face as they keep sorting through a receiver group that took a hit in the season opener.
After opening the 2026 season with a 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, San Francisco is making a roster move ahead of its home opener. The team placed De’Zhaun Stribling on injured reserve after he suffered a left ankle injury against the Rams, creating a need for more depth at wide receiver.
That opening has now gone to KhaDarel Hodge, who is being promoted to the active roster, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler reported that Hodge was a practice squad elevation against the Rams and finished the game with two tackles in Australia.

Hodge’s role in the opener was mostly on special teams. He played one offensive snap and 12 special-teams snaps, and both of his tackles came on kick coverage. For a team dealing with injuries in the receiver room, that kind of immediate value matters.
The 32-year-old’s NFL path started with the Rams, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Since then, he has also played for the Browns, Lions and Falcons. In 118 regular-season games, he has 67 catches for 1,026 yards and two touchdowns.
Stribling’s injury is a bigger part of the story here. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the rookie wideout suffered a deltoid sprain in his left ankle against the Rams and is expected to miss at least a month. Surgery is still a possibility, though it was not initially planned.
Even with that setback, the 49ers still have Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins available at receiver, while Christian Kirk remains on injured reserve. Against the Rams, Evans led the group with 48 snaps, Robinson played 40 and Samuel logged 26.
For now, Hodge shifts from a short-term elevation to a full-time spot on the active roster, giving Kyle Shanahan another veteran body for receiver depth and special teams as the 49ers prepare to host the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
