The Lakers are still hunting for perimeter help, but Adou Thiero is making a strong case that one answer might already be on the roster.
After Los Angeles beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 96-84 in Summer League, the second-year forward told Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times that JJ Redick has been pushing him toward a very specific role.
“JJ says that the things he wants, we need a POA, on-ball defender, and everything. So, just trying to go out there and be that, try and get reps in defending and then, offensively, just trying to play basketball, just trying to make the game more simple for myself.”
That message lines up with what Redick has stressed since taking over as head coach: the Lakers need players who can pressure ball handlers and make life harder for opposing offenses. Last season, that kind of consistent impact was hard to find.
Thiero looked ready to lean into the assignment against Oklahoma City. The 6-foot-8 forward put together a complete night, finishing with 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals, two blocks and no turnovers in 30 minutes.
The numbers told part of the story. The rest came from the way he played it - racing end to end, throwing down emphatic dunks and causing problems defensively all over the floor.
Afterward, Thiero wasn’t interested in making the night about highlight plays. He pointed to his defensive work and the chemistry he’s building.
Offensively, he has the kind of elite athleticism that jumps off the court, but this summer he seems focused on keeping things simple. His defensive upside may be the bigger selling point anyway.
That matters for a Lakers team that has already been busy this offseason. The front office has added Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Kevon Looney while still looking for more wing depth. Jonathan Kuminga remains one of the biggest names tied to the Lakers as they keep searching for athletic wings.
Still, the internal route could end up being just as important. If Thiero can become the point-of-attack defender Redick wants, he could push his way into a real rotation role sooner than expected.
Summer League doesn’t guarantee anything. But some traits translate, and the willingness to defend usually does.

Lakers Duo Sent Fans A Strange Signal In Uncertain Offseason
The Lakers have spent the summer reshaping the roster around a flurry of moves, adding Walker Kessler and signing Colin Sexton, Quentin Grimes and Austin Reaves while also exploring more changes on the margins. Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt have been part of the conversation, with both names surfacing in trade talk as the front office keeps working through options and no deal has come together yet.
Still, the sight of both players at Summer League in Las Vegas offered a curious backdrop to all that uncertainty. For a team that may be trying to clear more room for another move, their presence around the action only added to the sense that the Lakers are not done navigating this offseason, and that the next step could involve a familiar pairing if the right trade materializes. Collin Sexton Just Walked Into A Familiar LeBron Lakers Twist
Collin Sextons arrival in Los Angeles comes with a little dj vu attached. He signed with the Lakers as a free agent after LeBron James departed, and it is not the first time Sexton has found himself entering a franchise in the same offseason James walked out the door. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer James left for the second time, so the timing feels oddly familiar even before Sexton has put on a Lakers uniform.
For the Lakers, it is part of a broader reset after a recent playoff loss, with the front office reworking the roster around Sexton and several other new additions. The move gives Los Angeles another fresh piece as it tries to reshape the team without James, while Sexton brings his own history of landing in the middle of a post-LeBron transition. The only question now is how this version of the Lakers comes together once the new faces start fitting into place. [Read more 🡒]
JJ Redicks Message To Adou Thiero Says A Lot About Lakers Plans
Adou Thiero has already done enough in Summer League to get the Lakers attention, and not just because of the numbers. The rookie has stood out with his defensive activity and athleticism, showing the kind of disruptive presence Los Angeles can use on the wing, while also putting up a productive scoring line in Las Vegas.
What makes his early run more interesting is the direction JJ Redick is pushing him in. The Lakers coach has made it clear that Thieros value starts with becoming a defensive pest, a role that fits the way the team wants to build out its depth if his summer form carries over into camp and preseason. He has yet to connect from deep, but the bigger question for Los Angeles is whether this is the start of a longer path into Redicks plans. [Read more 🡒]
