The Golden State Warriors are heading into the season with a roster they pieced together as best they could, and Kristaps Porzingis is already at the center of a situation that has shifted fast.
Porzingis was one of the familiar names Golden State brought in during free agency, landing on a two-year, $40 million contract with a player option for the second season, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater. The deal came after he extended his current contract, which allowed him and the Warriors to reach an agreement before he would have hit the open market on Tuesday afternoon.
But the story around Porzingis has changed dramatically in recent weeks. He has been away from the team because of a health issue, and ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the absence stems from an autoimmune condition. Charania wrote that Golden State has begun exploring trade routes for Porzingis, who is “now seriously contemplating his future in basketball as he deals with recurring symptoms from the autoimmune condition termed as POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), sources tell ESPN.”
That uncertainty has pushed his NBA future into real doubt. Porzingis could decide to step away from the game, and that reality is part of why a trade feels far from immediate. NBA insider Brett Siegel said he does not expect movement anytime soon.
“Will have plenty of thoughts and details on what's happening with Kristaps Porzingis and the Warriors tomorrow with Tomer Azarly, as well as throughout the weeks as we get some more info, but my early thoughts on all of this: I would not expect any possible deal for a while,” Siegel wrote.
There are obvious reasons for that delay. Porzingis does not yet know what his next step will be, and teams around the league are unlikely to line up for a player whose basketball future is still unclear.
For now, Golden State is balancing two realities at once: supporting Porzingis through a serious health situation while also looking at the trade market as part of the NBA business. With no clear partner emerging, the most likely outcome appears to be that Porzingis remains on the Warriors’ roster for the time being.

Walker Kessler Faces A Huge Lakers Test Right Away
Walker Kessler is about to get thrown right into the kind of spotlight that can define a Lakers season before it really gets going. In the opener against the Golden State Warriors, the big man is set for his official debut in purple and gold, and it comes after a frustrating shoulder injury limited him to just five games last season. For a team expecting him to be part of the frontcourt picture, the first night is already shaping up as a meaningful early gauge of where he stands.
JJ Redick has already framed Kesslers arrival as a developmental process, with the adjustment not just about health but about handling a bigger role and learning to mesh with new teammates. Kessler has said the pressure of joining the Lakers makes staying positive especially important, and that mindset may matter as much as anything when the season starts and the rhythm of a new team has to come together quickly. Austin Reaves Had The Perfect Reaction To LeBron In Sixers Gear
LeBron James in a different uniform is still the kind of sight that stops a room, and Austin Reaves had the sort of reaction plenty of Lakers fans probably felt when they saw it. After James left Los Angeles in free agency to join a 76ers group built around Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown, the former Lakers teammate took in the preseason look and made it clear the image still carries some shock value.
For Reaves, the moment lands with a little extra weight because the Lakers are moving on without James and asking him to handle a bigger offensive load this season. James, meanwhile, is chasing another championship chance in Philadelphia, which only makes the transition more striking from Los Angeles side. Even in a preseason setting, seeing a familiar face in a new jersey is the sort of thing that lingers. [Read more 🡒]
Bronny James Just Drew More Pressure Than Lakers Fans Wanted
Bronny James rough start has already become part of the conversation around the Lakers before the regular season even settles in. During NBA Opening Night, comedian Tracy Morgan, a lifelong Knicks fan, publicly took aim at the young guard, adding another layer of attention to a player whose preseason has already drawn scrutiny for low scoring and shooting struggles.
The noise around James is especially notable because it is not just coming from outside the building. Lakers coach JJ Redick has also acknowledged the issues in his preseason play, which only heightens the sense that the evaluation is happening in real time. For a player still trying to find his footing, the pressure around every minute he gets is only getting louder. [Read more 🡒]
