Stephen Curry Kept This Lakers Loss From Feeling Like Just Preseason

Stephen Curry takes a heartfelt moment to celebrate the legacy of legendary coach Don Nelson before leading the Warriors to a commanding victory over the Lakers.

Stephen Curry used the spotlight before Golden State’s preseason game against the Lakers to honor a coach who helped shape the earliest part of his NBA career.

Tuesday night was marked as “Nellie Night,” a tribute to Don Nelson, the longtime coach and Hall of Fame figure who died in August at 86. Nelson, who also won five NBA championships as a player, coached Curry during the guard’s rookie season with the Warriors, before the franchise’s rise into a dynasty.

Golden State made the tribute visible on the uniforms, with yellow “Nellie” patches on the shoulder area that the team will wear throughout the season.

“I just want to welcome you back on our behalf. As you might notice, we have a new patch on our jersey this year to honor our former head coach, Mr.

Don Nelson. Give it up for him,” Curry told the crowd.

“He's second on the all-time list of wins in NBA history. He was my coach back in 2009 with some amazing guys who are here right now.”

Curry also called Nelson “an icon in the Bay area” and said the team plans to recognize him all year with the patches.

“We want to thank you all for coming to Nellie Night. Let's have a great night,” he said before heading to the sideline.

Nelson finished his head coaching career with 1,335 wins, a total that came across stops with the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks as well as Golden State.

Once the game got going, the Warriors handled business with a 124-98 win over a Lakers team that rested several regulars. Luka Doncic did not play after appearing in the previous preseason game, his first action since being sidelined with injury late last season. Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler were also out.

Curry logged 14 minutes and put up 16 points, five assists, and two rebounds. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg led Golden State with 17 points, while Brandin Podziemski added 16. Draymond Green chipped in three points, eight assists, and three rebounds.

Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis did not suit up for Golden State.

The teams will see each other again when the Lakers open the regular season against the Warriors on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 10 p.m. ET.

Warriors Got An Early Look At A Lakers Question That Still Matters

Ahead of the Lakers second preseason game against the Warriors, JJ Redick made it clear this was going to be more of a look-and-learn night than a full dress rehearsal. Nearly half the roster sat, including several key names, and the result was a one-sided loss that mattered less on the scoreboard than in the small roster battles still unfolding beneath it.

Jarred Vanderbilt once again flashed the defensive value that has long made him an interesting piece in Los Angeles, even as his offense stayed limited. On the other end, Jaden Hardy showed some scoring ability but also gave the ball away too often, which is the kind of preseason tradeoff that can linger into the regular season. With roster spots still unsettled, these kinds of performances are part of the evaluation the Lakers will keep weighing as they move closer to opening night. [Read more 🡒]

Austin Reaves Is Defining His Voice For This New-Look Lakers Team

Austin Reaves is stepping into a different kind of spotlight this fall, with the Lakers asking him to help guide a roster that now has to move forward without LeBron James. Coming off a strong season, Reaves is no longer just one of the reliable pieces around the stars, he is becoming one of the voices the team will lean on as it tries to establish a new identity.

Reaves has been clear about the kind of leadership he prefers, and it is not built around public callouts or dramatic scenes. He sees it as something more personal, rooted in one-on-one conversations and calm accountability, a style that fits his approach and the way he connects with teammates. For the Lakers, the question is not just whether he can produce, but whether that quieter voice can help set the tone for what comes next. [Read more 🡒]

Bronny James Just Gave Lakers Fans A Taste Of A New Problem

Bronny James got a quick lesson in the NBAs latest whistle trend during the Lakers preseason meeting with the Warriors, and it came in a moment that looked familiar to anyone who has watched the league tighten up on offensive contact. On one possession, James was called for an offensive foul after using his off arm to create separation against Stephen Curry, a call that fit squarely with the leagues new emphasis on limiting offensive players from fully extending or forcefully pushing defenders away.

For Lakers fans, it was the kind of preseason sequence that can say more than the box score. James and Curry both appeared amused by the whistle, but the bigger takeaway is that the NBA is making clear what it wants from ballhandlers and creators this season. For a young player trying to find his footing, and for a team that will need clean, disciplined offense around its stars, even a routine drive can turn into a teaching moment fast. [Read more 🡒]
