Sixers Suddenly Face A Joel Embiid Question Nobody Wanted

Could a blockbuster trade involving Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis reshape the 76ers and Lakers, reuniting a dynamic duo while addressing performance concerns?

The 76ers have put together a lineup that has a lot of people around the league paying attention, and for at least the next two seasons, Philadelphia looks loaded. The starting five, on paper, is the kind of group that can give opponents real problems.

But there’s one major concern hanging over all of it: Joel Embiid.

ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins said he wasn’t impressed by what he saw from Embiid in one preseason game, and he pointed specifically to how the big man was moving.

“I didn't like the way that Joel Embiid looked last night. I didn't like the way that he was getting up and down the floor...to me, he wasn't moving well, which pointed to me that says LeBron James is gonna play a lot of center position this year.

LeBron James is gonna have to and guess what? The Philadelphia 76ers actually could win the Eastern Conference this year, and make it to the NBA Finals with LeBron James playing majority of the center position,” Perkins said.

That uncertainty has opened the door to some wild speculation, including a potential Embiid-for-Anthony Davis deal. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn tied the idea to the broader offseason chatter around Davis and LeBron James.

“I mean ... we spent a month in free agency hearing about how much LeBron James would like to reunite with Anthony Davis. These aren't hard dots to connect here, though a trade really only makes sense if Davis stays healthy and Embiid struggles,” Quinn wrote.

There’s also another layer to the Davis situation. His agent, Rich Paul, is reportedly looking into possible trade routes, with an extension with the Washington Wizards not seeming likely.

“But Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, is one of the game’s most powerful player representatives, and he has proven skilled at securing the deals his high-profile clients want, in the cities where they want to be. There’s little doubt that Paul already has gamed out other teams’ interest in Davis and will continue to do so as February’s trade deadline approaches,” The Athletic’s Josh Robbins wrote.

From a basketball standpoint, a swap like that could make sense for Philadelphia. It would bring James together with a player he knows well and add Davis’ defense to the mix.

Lakers Opener Looms With One Big Question About This New Core

The Lakers wrapped up their 2026-27 preseason with a little of everything, including encouraging stretches from new additions Ziaire Williams and Sandro Mamukelashvili. For a roster trying to settle into a new look, those flashes mattered, even if the overall picture still felt unfinished. There was enough there to make the early returns intriguing, but not nearly enough to say the group is already in sync.

What stands out more heading into the opener is how little Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler got to share the floor together. Add in the turnover issues that showed up during the exhibition slate and Collin Sexton missing the preseason with an injury, and the Lakers still have some sorting out to do once the games count. The talent is obvious, but the first real test is whether this new core can sharpen quickly enough to avoid a slow start. [Read more 🡒]

Adou Thiero Is Forcing His Way Into A Real Lakers Debate

The Lakers have spent the offseason trying to reshape their roster around youth and athleticism, and Adou Thiero has already become one of the more interesting pieces in that conversation. The second-year wing has put together encouraging preseason work and, in the process, earned the trust of coach JJ Redick as a player who can help bring energy and versatility to a group still sorting out its best combinations.

Even with a minor injury slowing him right now, Thiero looks like a legitimate candidate to push for regular rotation minutes once the season gets moving. For a Lakers team looking for more defensive edge and more legs on the perimeter, his path is simple in theory and competitive in practice, which is exactly why this is starting to feel like a real debate rather than a training-camp subplot. James Worthy Sees A Surprising Lakers Fit Fans Need To Watch

Sandro Mamukelashvili has already given the Lakers something to chew on during preseason, and it is the kind of performance that tends to catch the eye of people who have seen just about everything. James Worthy came away impressed by the way Mamukelashvili plays, praising the mix of physicality and skill in his game and even likening the style to Manu Ginobili. Against the Nuggets, he backed it up with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, a line that stood out because it came from a player doing more than just filling space on the floor.

For a Lakers team still sorting out its rotation and identities, that kind of versatility matters. JJ Redick has described Mamukelashvili as an offensive piece who can move between positions, and he expects him to be involved in a meaningful way this season. The question now is how that preseason promise translates once the games start to count, especially if his ability to fit into different lineup combinations turns out to be more important than anyone first imagined.
