Kevin Durant’s future in Houston is already looking murky, and the latest trade chatter has only turned up the heat.
The Rockets brought Durant in as a way to level up their roster and close the gap in the West, but the move has not been treated like some untouchable, long-term marriage. That’s the tension hanging over the franchise now: Houston wants to chase championships, but it also wants to keep building around its young core. Those two goals do not always point in the same direction.
“Whether or not the Rockets look to continue their partnership with Durant is the big question at large, especially since they don't view him as an “untouchable” talent in trade talks on their roster. Houston viewed the opportunity to acquire Durant as a way to upgrade from Jalen Green and bridge the gaps in their lineup to contend in the West, but by no means was this addition viewed as a long-term commitment,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.
If Houston does decide to move on, Detroit has surfaced as a possible landing spot. The idea is intriguing enough on its own, but there’s also a specific connection at the center of it: Durant’s reported interest in playing with Cade Cunningham.
“Two league sources with knowledge of the situation told ClutchPoints that the Pistons were set on figuring out a path to land Durant, but nothing ever materialized in this three-team idea, nor did anything appear possible in brief discussions with only Houston. Perhaps the greatest detail to emerge from all of these rumors is that Durant has interest in playing alongside Pistons star Cade Cunningham, sources said,” Siegel wrote.
Heavy.com’s Adel Ahmad laid out a three-team blockbuster that would send Durant to Detroit with the Brooklyn Nets acting as the facilitator. In that scenario, Houston would land Michael Porter Jr. from Brooklyn, along with Duncan Robinson and Ron Holland II from Detroit, plus a 2028 first-round pick from Brooklyn and two first-round picks from Detroit.
For Houston, Porter would be the headliner, bringing championship experience from his title run with the Denver Nuggets in 2023. Detroit would get another high-end scorer to pair with Cunningham as it keeps pushing toward contender status in the Eastern Conference. And Brooklyn would be the team helping grease the wheels to make the whole thing work.
