The longer Nikola Jokic goes without signing an extension with the Denver Nuggets, the more the Los Angeles Lakers can dream on a scenario that would send the three-time league MVP to L.A.
Jokic has already made it clear that he will not sign an extension with Denver this offseason. That leaves open the possibility that he reaches unrestricted free agency next summer, and that is where the Lakers’ interest starts to matter. They don’t have the cap space to simply outbid everyone and poach him outright, but they could still try to get him with help from Luka Doncic.
Doncic and Jokic are close friends, and Doncic would look like the ideal recruiter if the Lakers wanted to sell Jokic on a move. If Jokic ever chose to leave, Los Angeles could also put together a sign-and-trade with Denver that might include Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler.
That kind of deal would leave the Nuggets with a tough choice: take the return or risk losing Jokic for nothing to another team.
The Lakers are hardly hiding what they’d do if the opportunity ever opened up. They would “move heaven and Earth” to land Jokic, and they already have a potential trade framework ready to go with Reaves and Kessler. Denver would obviously prefer to keep Jokic, but the threat is that the decision may not be entirely theirs if he reaches next summer without an extension.
From Denver’s side, Reaves and Kessler wouldn’t be a disastrous fallback. Reaves is described as an above-average starting shooting guard and a borderline all-star even. Kessler brings above-average rim protection and rebounding.
Still, that’s not the outcome the Nuggets want to be staring at.
The problem for Denver is that the team has been trying to cut salary, and some of the long-term decisions have already raised eyebrows. The Peyton Watson trade is the latest example.
Denver got worse by moving on from Watson, even if it received a first- and second-round pick in return. That first-rounder also is not viewed as especially strong.
And the chain reaction may not stop there. The Nuggets could end up using that pick to trade Christian Braun in another move aimed at saving money. If that happens, it only adds to the concern that Denver could make it harder to keep Jokic happy - and easier for the Lakers to wait for their opening.
