Luka Dončić has never been one to sugarcoat things, and his latest soundbite is a perfect example. As the Lakers gear up for a three-game East Coast road trip, starting with a matchup against the surprisingly strong Toronto Raptors, Dončić was asked what he thought of the team’s hot start.
His answer? Classic Luka.
“I don’t watch much NBA, sorry,” he said with a grin. “I know they have a good record. I know [coach Darko Rajaković] and I know he has them playing physical, but we’re going to see in the scouting report.”
Honest? Absolutely.
Hilarious? Without question.
And while it might seem odd for one of the league’s biggest stars to admit he’s not glued to League Pass every night, it’s also a reminder of just how demanding the NBA schedule is - even for the guys living it.
Dončić and the Lakers are coming off a tough 125-108 loss to the Suns, which snapped a seven-game winning streak. But that stumble doesn’t take away from what’s been a dominant stretch for both the team and its new centerpiece.
Dončić has been electric in his first full season in the purple and gold, averaging an eye-popping 35.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 8.9 assists per game. He’s not just scoring - he’s doing it efficiently and with flair, leading the league in points per game and outpacing last season’s MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, by nearly three points a night.
It’s the kind of production that feels almost casual coming from Dončić. There’s a certain ease to his game - a mix of creativity, control, and confidence that makes 30-point nights look routine. He plays with the kind of joy that reminds you he’s still just a kid at heart, even if he’s torching defenses like a seasoned vet.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are starting to round into form. LeBron James has returned after missing the first month of the season, and Austin Reaves has emerged as a legitimate co-star alongside Dončić, putting up 28.1 points per game. That trio gives L.A. a potent mix of experience, skill, and swagger - a formula that’s working so far, even if Dončić isn’t keeping tabs on every team in the East.
Toronto, for its part, has been one of the early surprises of the season. At 14-7, they’ve put themselves firmly in the mix near the top of the Eastern Conference, playing a physical, disciplined brand of basketball under Rajaković. The Lakers will get their first look at them on Thursday, and while Dončić might not have them bookmarked on his watchlist, he’ll be ready when the ball tips.

After Thursday, the Lakers won’t see the Raptors again until January 18 in Los Angeles. So unless they’re on the scouting report, don’t expect Dončić to be catching many Raptors games between now and then. But when it’s time to play, you can bet he’ll be locked in - even if he needed a little homework to get there.
