Luka Doncic is on a roll, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to four straight victories with his recent offensive brilliance. The latest triumph came against the Chicago Bulls, where Doncic set a new personal high with the Lakers, dropping 51 points.
Doncic was in the zone, shooting 17-of-31 from the field, an impressive 9-of-14 from three-point range, and nearly perfect from the free-throw line at 8-of-9. It was a display of offensive artistry, as he scored from all over the court, punishing the Bulls whenever they left him with just one defender.
The spark for Doncic's scoring surge seemed to ignite in the second quarter, thanks to some on-court chatter from Matas Buzelis. The exchange appeared to fuel Doncic, who was seen smiling and engaging with the Bulls' bench as he racked up points.
After the game, Doncic acknowledged that Buzelis’ words fired him up. “Oh, yeah, it feels special.
I obviously haven’t had a 50-point game in a year, so it feels very special. In the second quarter, I felt that somebody started talking to me, so that woke me up,” Doncic explained.
“Matas Buzelis. I was surprised, I was shocked.
I’m not gonna say what he said, but if I said it, I would definitely get a [technical foul]. But really, these games, sometimes you’re going easy, and we kind of went easy in the first quarter, then he woke me up.”
Trash-talking a player like Doncic is risky business. He thrives on that motivation, and while Buzelis had a decent scoring night himself, it paled in comparison to Doncic's performance.
Doncic isn't one to back down when challenged, often rising to the occasion when provoked. For younger players like Buzelis, it's a lesson learned: poking the bear can backfire. Doncic’s recent scoring spree has been spectacular, and the Lakers will need him to keep it up as they face the Denver Nuggets next.
As for the possibility of surpassing Bam Adebayo’s record-breaking 83-point game, Doncic's career-high stands at 73 points, achieved during his time with the Dallas Mavericks. When asked about potentially reaching or exceeding Adebayo's milestone, Doncic offered a measured response, acknowledging the challenge but leaving the door open for future possibilities.
