Luka Doncic is back in the spotlight before the Lakers have even opened training camp, and this time it’s in a Gatorade commercial loaded with some of the biggest names in sports.
Doncic, who spent most of the offseason overseas in his native Slovenia, is on his way back to the United States as the Lakers inch toward the 2026-27 NBA season. Los Angeles is set to begin preseason play on Oct. 5 against the Sacramento Kings, and Doncic is expected to return to Los Angeles about a week before Lakers media day, according to Martin Pavcnik of Sportklub.
The commercial itself brings together a heavy hitter lineup. Along with Doncic, it features NFL stars Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders. WNBA standouts Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces also appear, as does Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners.

Doncic has a growing list of sponsorship ties, including Jordan Brand, and this likely won’t be the last time he shows up in a major ad campaign as the NBA season approaches.
Back in Europe, Doncic has been in what has been described as the “final phase” of his preparation for the 2026-27 campaign, though that work has not included basketball training. According to the reporting, he entered the final stretch of his individual buildup in Ljubljana, took a brief break by the sea, then resumed work in part at a fitness center and in part in a basketball hall.

Once training camp gets rolling and the Lakers begin their five preseason games against the Kings, Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets, there will be plenty to sort out before the regular season starts on Oct. 21.
The biggest question facing JJ Redick is who will grab the fifth starting spot alongside Doncic, Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler and presumably Quentin Grimes. Sandro Mamukelashvili is the writer’s pick to start at power forward, but Redick has several other candidates in the mix, including Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, Jarred Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia.
That competition should be one of the main things to watch when camp opens and the preseason gets underway.
