Gilbert Arenas thinks the NBA may have a problem on its hands if the version of Luka Doncic that showed up at the Lakers minicamp in Slovenia is the real one. After seeing a picture of Doncic looking noticeably slimmer, Arenas didn’t hold back.
“Oh that’s Luka!” Arenas said while reacting to a picture of Doncic.
“Oh, y’all in trouble. Laker Nation, that leading scorer trophy is gonna be ours.
It’s gonna have our name on it. Yes, it’s coming to the crib.
Because if the fat one average 32, 33 on you, what you think the skinny one about to average? With no LeBron James?”
That’s the kind of confidence Doncic has earned. In 2025-26, he put up 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game for the Lakers, good enough to claim his second scoring title. Arenas believes a third one is coming in 2027.
The timing only adds to the intrigue. LeBron James is gone this summer, off to the Philadelphia 76ers, which means Doncic is set to shoulder even more of the offense. He already averaged 35.1 points in the 15 games he played without James last season, so there’s plenty of reason to expect another huge scoring load.
Doncic’s body has become a major talking point before. He went through an offseason transformation in 2025 after the negative reports that surfaced following his February trade from the Dallas Mavericks.
That summer, he looked to be in the best shape he had been in for years. Now, he appears even leaner, and Arenas thinks the change may be tied to the turmoil in his personal life.
“See, women do that to you,” Arenas said. “That ain’t no way.
He ain’t work out [like that]. That’s the wife.
That’s the trying to get half. That is a** stressing.
Sometimes that negativity burns you for you to be successful.”
Doncic announced in March 2026 that he and Goltes had split. The two were engaged in July 2023 and have two daughters together: Gabriela and Olivia.
After the split, Goltes filed a petition for child support in Los Angeles before unexpectedly withdrawing it in early August. She said she wanted the issue handled amicably and by mutual agreement, because that was best for the children.
But the matter didn’t end there. Goltes later filed a new claim in Slovenia and is said to be seeking $50 million from him, including $40 million for herself and $10 million for the children.
She also reportedly wants to strip him of some custody rights.
Whether any of that pushed Doncic into this latest physical transformation is another matter. The safer read is simpler: he has started taking better care of his body, and the Mavericks’ trade may have been the jolt he needed. He also changed his training program this summer.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are already being dismissed by plenty of people. That’s exactly the kind of noise Doncic will want to answer.
Los Angeles finished fourth in the Western Conference last season at 53-29, but Doncic missed the entire playoff run with a grade 2 left hamstring strain. It was the second straight season he lost a significant chunk of time, and the Lakers will be hoping the injury problems finally ease up.
