Luka Doncic Is Giving Lakers Fans A New Debate After Another Heavy Lift

Luka Doncic's defensive prowess deserves recognition as Walker Kessler lauds his on-court intelligence amid challenging matchups.

The Lakers got the response they needed Sunday night, but the real story was Luka Doncic doing a little bit of everything to steady them when the game started to wobble.

Los Angeles held off the Toronto Raptors for a 131-125 win after coming off the loss to the Golden State Warriors, and Doncic was the engine throughout. He finished with a game-high 45 points, 15 rebounds and six assists, all while absorbing heavy defensive attention and still finding ways to tilt the floor in the Lakers’ favor.

What stood out most, though, was the defensive side of his night. Doncic came away with five steals and three charges, and that was enough for Walker Kessler to step in and push back on the usual criticism that follows the star around. Speaking to the media, Kessler said:

“He had five steals and three charges. Incredible.

Just incredible. Luka doesn’t get enough credit for his defense.

He’s a very high-IQ individual when it comes to being on the court. So, his positional defense is being in the right spot at the right time, and it is really good.”

That praise carries weight coming from Kessler, who anchors the Lakers’ defense and backed it up with his own strong line: 16 points, 15 rebounds, a steal and three blocks against Toronto.

Doncic’s defense has never been the first thing people mention, but Sunday showed how he can still make an impact without relying on pure athleticism. Kessler pointed to positioning and timing, and Doncic’s active hands were just as important. The steals and charges weren’t side notes - they were part of what made his performance so controlling.

Even so, the win wasn’t a clean team-wide statement. Outside of Doncic and Kessler, the Lakers didn’t get much consistent help. Austin Reaves managed 19 points but needed 16 shots to get there, while Quentin Grimes had a quiet night with seven points and three assists on 2-for-4 shooting in 24 minutes.

There were some useful contributions elsewhere. Collin Sexton added 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Jake LaRavia chipped in eight points and four assists while hitting 2 of 3 from deep. Sandro Mamukelashvili scored 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

But the overall production dipped in the second half, and that made the Lakers lean even harder on Doncic.

Right now, Doncic looks to be in spectacular form. The problem for Los Angeles is that his run is being muted by the uneven play around him, which only raises the burden on him night after night.

Luka Doncic Had Extra Fire In A Huge Lakers Bounce-Back Win

Luka Doncic delivered the kind of response the Lakers needed in a 131-125 bounce-back win over the Raptors, piling up 45 points with 15 rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block while carrying the offense through a high-scoring night. He was efficient from everywhere, hitting 12 of 23 shots, 8 of 12 from deep and all 13 free throws, a performance that fit the urgency of a team trying to steady itself after a rough stretch.

The night also carried a little extra edge beyond the box score, with Doncic showing the sort of fire that can change the feel of a game when the margin is tight and the emotions are rising. It was his 71st 40-point game, and the Lakers got the full force of a superstar performance that left Toronto with no answer and Los Angeles with a much-needed win. [Read more 🡒]

Jarred Vanderbilt Just Changed A Lakers Rotation Problem

Jarred Vanderbilt spent the summer looking like one of the Lakers more obvious trade candidates, but the early stretch of the 2026-27 season has pushed him back into a more useful role. He has been getting steadier minutes, averaging 17.0 per game, and his value has shown up in the way he crashes the glass and brings the kind of physical edge this roster often needs.

What makes the situation more interesting is how it has affected the frontcourt picture around him. Los Angeles signed Kevon Looney in the offseason to help stabilize the middle, but he has not played in the last two games, leaving Vanderbilts energy and rebounding to fill a bigger slice of the rotation than anyone might have expected a few weeks ago. Luka Doncics Hot Streak Is Exposing A Bigger Lakers Problem

Luka Doncic has been carrying the Lakers offense through a stretch where the scoring load has become impossible to ignore. He has turned in a string of huge nights, including a season-high 52 points against Utah and a dominant first half against Toronto, but the bigger picture has not changed much for Los Angeles. Even with Doncic piling up points, the Lakers have gone 1-2 over their last three games, a reminder that one superstar heater can only cover so many cracks.

The issue is starting to look less like a temporary slump and more like a roster-wide problem. Outside of Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers have struggled to find steady offensive help, and that lack of balance is making every game feel like a grind. Until someone else consistently lightens the load, Doncics hot streak may keep producing eye-catching box scores without delivering the kind of wins the Lakers need. [Read more 🡒]
