Luka Doncic Is Forcing A New Lakers Question Fast

Luka Doncic's jaw-dropping halftime buzzer-beater against the Blazers underscores his historic scoring streak and cements his status among Lakers greats.

Luka Doncic keeps finding new ways to bend a basketball game to his will, and Friday night in Portland gave the Lakers another jaw-dropper to file away.

Just before halftime against the Trail Blazers, Doncic launched a shot from near the opposite 3-point line and buried it at the buzzer, a ridiculous make that instantly became one of the night’s loudest moments. Even Bruce Springsteen couldn’t believe what he just witnessed.

That wasn’t the only milestone on a huge night for the Lakers star. By the time the game was over, Doncic had already stacked up his fourth straight 40-point outing, putting him in rare company alongside Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant and George Mikan as the only players in franchise history to do it in the regular season.

Los Angeles leaned on him all night and came away with a 124-118 win over Portland, its fourth straight victory. The Lakers were slow to settle in during the first half, but Doncic’s surge carried them through and pushed the team to 8-2.

He finished with 53 points, five rebounds and five assists, adding to a blistering run that has produced 180 points over his last four games. Through nine games this season, he’s averaging 40.1 points per game.

Afterward, head coach JJ Redick said he was running out of ways to describe what he’s seeing from his star.

“Sure. I'm gonna just sit around and will gather one day, come up with more superlatives so I have more words ready. But for now, I don't have any words,” Redick said after the win.

Blazers Loss To Lakers Put Portlands Biggest Role Questions Back In Focus

The first NBA Cup game of the season offered Portland a familiar kind of frustration, the sort that can make a promising night feel suddenly unfinished. The Trail Blazers had control early against the Lakers, building a double-digit cushion in the first half, and they got strong work from Deni Avdija, who came close to a triple-double, while Damian Lillard carried the scoring load for much of the night.

But the loss also pushed the Blazers biggest role questions right back into view, especially around the backcourt where Scoot Hendersons uneven night stood out. With Luka Doncic driving the Lakers comeback, Portland was left sorting through the same issues that have followed this group for stretches, and the result was another reminder that the team still has to find a cleaner balance when the game tightens and the pressure rises. Anthony Davis To Lakers Talk Comes With One Huge Problem

Anthony Davis midseason move to Washington has already created a new layer of intrigue for the Lakers, even if it is still early in the process. ESPNs Brian Windhorst said the Wizards are taking a measured approach, wanting to see Davis over a meaningful stretch before making any call on an extension, which naturally shapes how the rest of the league has to view him. He has gotten off to a productive start in Washington, averaging 23.4 points and 9.3 rebounds in his first eight games there, and that kind of production is enough to keep the speculation machine humming.

For the Lakers, though, the path back is not simple. Any talk of a reunion runs into the reality that Los Angeles does not have much left in the way of premium trade pieces, which makes a big swing far more complicated than the name value alone would suggest. Until Washington makes its long-term intentions clearer, Davis remains one of the more interesting players to monitor on the market, but the Lakers are hardly in position to chase him without serious hurdles. Jimmy Butler Had The Perfect Sideline Reaction In Warriors-Magic

The Warriors-Magic game at Chase Center had enough going on to keep the crowd locked in, from the on-court dustup between Georges Niang and Wendell Carter Jr. to Stephen Curry hitting another three on the way to a notable statistical milestone. Orlando had the edge late, with Nikola Vucevic, Franz Wagner and Tristan da Silva helping the Magic stay in front while Curry and Brandin Podziemski carried Golden States offense.

Even the sideline had its own reaction to the moment, with Jimmy Butler in the building as the Warriors tried to chase down the lead. For a team still trying to sort out its rhythm and health, every swing in a tight game matters, and Butlers presence added another layer to a night that already felt chippy, tense and very much in the middle of the season grind.
