Derek Fisher thinks the Lakers’ real edge isn’t coming from the defensive end at all. It starts with Luka Doncic, and it starts early.
That was Fisher’s read on Los Angeles while talking to 97.1 The Fan, where he pushed back on the idea that the Lakers have to become a shutdown defensive team to control games. The Lakers have been trying to build that identity, but Fisher said their offense is already doing the heavy lifting.
“We spent a lot of our time talking about the Lakers and the commitment to the defensive end that they wanted to have, that they could be a nasty defensive team. I think the reality thus far is that their best defense is their offense.
“I don’t know if they’re going to necessarily be a lockdown, shut-them-down team defensively. I think the pressure that they put on you offensively is what will break teams’ spirit, and that’ll be the end of the floor where they can impose their will the most.”
The timing of Fisher’s comments matters. JJ Redick was frustrated during the Lakers-Raptors game when Los Angeles let a fourth-quarter lead slip, even though the team still pulled out the win.
It was the kind of stretch that reminded everyone the Lakers are still not where Redick wants them defensively. They sit 16th in the league in Defensive Rating, allowing 114.4 points per 100 possessions.
But Fisher’s point is that the Lakers may not need to win with stops if Doncic keeps putting teams under immediate pressure. He pointed to the way Los Angeles starts games, and how that changes the tone before opponents can settle in.
Speaking after the Lakers’ 138-117 win over the Miami Heat, Fisher said Doncic’s early scoring bursts make life miserable for the other side.
“I think that’s really what stands out the most, they’re going to stress people out on the offensive end. They start fast because Luka starts fast, which automatically puts a lot of stress and anxiety on opposing teams because you’re almost playing from behind against them.
“It’s really hard to get a lead on them just due to how fast Luka can get his production started.”
Doncic backed that up against Miami with 42 points, and he’s averaging 38.3 points per game this season. He has scored more than 40 in four of his past five games, a run that has made Fisher’s argument hard to ignore.
The praise around Doncic has only grown. Sandro Mamukelashvili called his ability “unexplainable”, while Sasha Vujacic said his “killer instinct” reminds him of Kobe Bryant.

Luka Just Showed How Dangerous These Lakers Can Be
The Lakers latest win over Miami offered another reminder of how explosive this group can look when the offense is clicking. Luka Doncic set the tone with a relentless all-around performance, Austin Reaves added a big scoring punch, and Walker Kessler gave Los Angeles a strong interior presence as the team rolled to a comfortable 138-117 victory.
What stood out beyond the final score was the way the Lakers controlled the game in multiple areas, from ball movement to perimeter shooting to work inside. It was the kind of complete showing that can make them a tough matchup on any night, and it also hinted at just how much more dangerous this team can become if this version shows up consistently. Luka Doncics Scoring Tear Comes With A Message Lakers Fans Will Love
Luka Doncics early run with the Lakers has been as loud as it has been efficient, and the numbers have only reinforced what the eye test has already suggested. Over his last five games, he has averaged 39.6 points while helping push Los Angeles to a 5-2 start, and he currently sits atop the NBA scoring race at 37.7 points per game with career-best shooting marks to go with it.
What makes the surge even more intriguing is how much more there may still be to come. After the Lakers recent win over the Raptors, JJ Redick praised Doncics offensive impact, and the broader message around the team is hard to miss: this is a star carrying the attack while still working his way into a fuller rhythm. For Lakers fans, that combination of production and room for growth is about as encouraging as it gets this early in the season. [Read more 🡒]
Lakers Are Showing A Luka Identity Fans Can Actually Believe In
The early part of the 2026-27 season has given the Lakers something they have been chasing for a while: a real offensive identity. Luka Doncic has been at the center of it, leading the team in scoring and assists while the attack has climbed near the top of the league in several key categories. Austin Reaves has been part of that lift too, giving the group another reliable creator and helping the offense feel less like a collection of names and more like a system with purpose.
What stands out is how naturally the ball is moving when Doncic is running the show and his teammates are playing with conviction around him. The Lakers have looked comfortable leaning into that structure early, and the results have been strong enough to make the approach feel sustainable rather than temporary. There is still a long season ahead, but for now the team is showing a version of itself that fans can actually trust. [Read more 🡒]
