Lakers
Luka Doncic's transition from the Mavericks to the Lakers seems to be a strategic move aimed at enhancing his championship prospects. In a recent chat with Slovenia’s SportKlub, Doncic shared his thoughts on the two organizations, expressing a clear preference for his new team.
“The organization here is better,” Doncic remarked. “The Lakers are a truly legendary club, and the organization is legendary too.”
Indeed, the Lakers' storied history, boasting 17 NBA titles, underscores their commitment to star power. While Doncic led Dallas to the Finals in 2024, the team has struggled post-trade and is on the brink of missing another postseason.
Sources close to Doncic revealed to Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal that a return to the Mavericks is improbable, partly due to dissatisfaction with the Mavs' internal criticism of Doncic's conditioning. Though Doncic maintains relationships with some former teammates and staff, he has yet to reconnect with coach Jason Kidd.
Suns
Phoenix has made a notable addition by signing Highsmith, who drew interest from several playoff contenders, including the Lakers and 76ers, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Despite not playing this season due to knee surgery and a subsequent rehab setback, Highsmith's agent confirms he is now healthy.
Known for his defensive versatility and a solid 38.8 percent three-point shooting over the past two seasons, Highsmith's addition could be significant for the Suns. John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports notes that the second year of his deal isn’t fully guaranteed.
Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets are addressing a roster need by signing KJ Simpson to fill a two-way spot, as reported by Charania. Simpson, originally drafted by the Hornets in 2024, played in 50 games before being waived earlier this month, averaging 7.3 points in 21.3 minutes per game.
This move follows Denver's decision to promote Spencer Jones to a standard contract. Simpson's eligibility allows him to participate in up to 16 games this season, contingent on the timing of the deal's finalization.
