Austin Reaves says Luka Doncic has found something with Lakers fans that LeBron James never quite had the moment he arrived in Los Angeles: a clean slate.
Reaves pointed to the different baggage each star brought with him when talking to the California Post. With James, the history was already loaded.
“I think with the Bron situation it was a little different just because Bron and Kobe were battling for the best player in the NBA for multiple years, so Lakers fans at the time probably hated LeBron,” Reaves told the California Post. “Not that they didn’t accept him when he was here, but they still probably had the ‘Kobe is better’ type of mentality.
But they don’t have that with Luka. He was kind of after Kobe.
They don’t have a reason not to embrace him like a Kobe or someone else who was a Laker legend.”
That contrast helps explain why Doncic has already been so readily absorbed as the face of the franchise. He hasn’t spent years on the other side of the rivalry, and he didn’t come in carrying the same long-running tension that followed James.
When LeBron signed with the Lakers in 2018, the reaction was complicated from the jump. Nobody was going to dismiss a player with that kind of résumé, but plenty of fans still weren’t eager to fully welcome him.
Some accepted him right away. Others made it clear they viewed him as something short of a true Laker.
That sentiment didn’t come out of nowhere. James had spent more than a decade tormenting teams around the league, including plenty of battles against the Lakers and the late Kobe Bryant, whose shadow still loomed large over the franchise. So even after LeBron got to Los Angeles, some of that old resistance stuck around.
Doncic arrived with a very different kind of reception. He came in before he had time to build up any kind of resentment with the fan base, and that matters in a place where legends are measured against the standard set by the past. He had beaten the Lakers before, but he didn’t come with the same history James carried.
There’s also the simple fact that Doncic’s Lakers chapter has been about expectation from day one. He’s got nothing on the board in Los Angeles yet, and fans are waiting for results. If that doesn’t come, the goodwill can disappear fast.
For now, though, Reaves sees a player who has already connected with the crowd in a way James had to work through over time. And with Doncic pushing toward a title chase, the mission is clear: turn that early embrace into something permanent.

Lakers May Need To Wait Briefly On A Rotation Surprise
Jake LaRavia gave the Lakers an early glimpse of what he can bring in the rotation before an ankle injury interrupted his season opener against the Warriors. He was ruled out for the next game against the Clippers, but the injury does not appear to be viewed as a long-term setback, and his strong first-night showing made him one of the more interesting early pieces in JJ Redicks mix.
Redick sounded optimistic that LaRavia could be back soon, with a possible return either Oct. 25 against the Jazz or Oct. 27 against the Trail Blazers. For a Lakers team still sorting out its rotation, the timing matters, because LaRavias brief debut offered a glimpse of a role that could matter once he is healthy enough to reclaim it. [Read more 🡒]
JJ Redick Draws A Clear Line For Luka With Lakers Defense
JJ Redick has made the boundaries pretty clear for Luka Doncic: talk to the referees if you want, but not at the expense of the Lakers getting back on defense. After Los Angeles handled the Warriors, the conversation around Doncic shifted away from the result and toward the moments when emotion and game management can overlap, especially when a possession turns into a transition scramble.
Doncic said he wants to stay away from technical fouls while keeping his emotions in check after his confrontation with Golden State rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, and that is where the tension lies for the Lakers. Redicks stance suggests the team can live with some arguing, but not if it leaves them exposed in the kind of defense that matters most when the floor opens up and the game speeds up. [Read more 🡒]
Rui Hachimuras First Clippers Reunion Brought A Lakers Twist Fans Noticed
Rui Hachimuras first meeting with his old Lakers teammates since joining the Clippers had the feel of a reunion before it even settled into a rivalry. The warm reception he received from former teammates said plenty about how he was viewed in Los Angeles, and Hachimura seemed to return the sentiment, speaking highly of his time with the Lakers while also embracing the start of a new chapter with the Clippers.
There was still a basketball game to sort through, and the night did not break in the Clippers favor, but the emotions around Hachimura were hard to miss. Luka Doncic added another layer afterward by voicing his friendship and respect for Hachimura, a reminder that these cross-town matchups can carry more personal history than the box score shows.
