Luka Carried The Lakers But This Win Still Felt Unsettling

Despite a thrilling close, the Lakers overcame the Raptors' late surge, with Luka Doncic stealing the show with a record-breaking performance.

The Lakers got exactly what they needed out of Luka Doncic on Sunday night, and then some.

Los Angeles beat the Toronto Raptors 131-125 at Crypto.com Arena, but the final score doesn’t really capture how much of the night belonged to Doncic. He piled up 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals, powering the Lakers through a game that looked comfortable for long stretches before getting far too close for comfort late.

Doncic’s line put him in a class all by himself. He became the first player in NBA history to record 45+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 5+ steals and 5+ three-pointers in a game.

He finished with 45 points on 12-for-23 shooting, including 8-for-12 from deep, and added 13-for-13 at the line. Even with seven turnovers, the night was overwhelmingly about how little Toronto could do to slow him down.

What stood out just as much as the scoring was the work he put in on the other end. Doncic came away with five steals and drew three charges, showing a level of activity that matched the offensive explosion.

He now leads the league in charges drawn with four this season. Through the early part of the 2026-27 campaign, he’s also averaging a league-best 37.7 points per game.

The Lakers also got a strong interior effort from Walker Kessler, who continues to bring value in the exact areas the team wants from him. Kessler finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, and he did it without missing a shot, going 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.

That made him just the second Laker in franchise history to post those numbers while shooting 100.0% from the field, joining Wilt Chamberlain in 1968-69. He also became one of 10 players in NBA history to do it.

Kessler’s offense remains simple, mostly built on lobs and finishes around the rim, but his defense was the real story again. He controlled the glass, protected the paint and added a steal for good measure. For the Lakers, that’s the point.

For a while, it looked like Los Angeles might cruise to a clean win and move to 5-2. The Lakers led by as many as 26 points, and they were still up 22 entering the fourth quarter.

Then the game got messy. Toronto scored 43 in the final period, the lead nearly vanished, and head coach JJ Redick had to bring his starters back in to help close it out.

The Lakers did escape with the victory, but the sloppiness was hard to ignore. Los Angeles turned it over 24 times, and that kind of number can turn a comfortable night into a scramble in a hurry.

The schedule doesn’t give them much time to breathe. The Lakers are back on the floor Monday for the second game of a back-to-back against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Miami Heat. With three more games still on the calendar for the rest of the week after that, some rest could be in play.

Luka Doncic Is Giving Lakers Fans A New Debate After Another Heavy Lift

Luka Doncic kept dragging the Lakers through another tight night, and the 131-125 win over Toronto only added to the sense that every game seems to come with a fresh discussion about how much he is carrying. He piled up 45 points, 15 rebounds and six assists, giving Los Angeles the kind of all-around production that can cover for uneven stretches elsewhere in the rotation.

Walker Kessler was one of the few other steady presences, finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds while also making his mark on the defensive end. He praised Doncics defensive intelligence, which is part of what makes these nights so interesting for the Lakers: the star is doing so much on one end that his value keeps expanding beyond the box score, even as the rest of the roster continues to have its share of mixed results. Luka Doncic Had Extra Fire In A Huge Lakers Bounce-Back Win

Luka Doncic gave the Lakers exactly the kind of response they needed in a 131-125 bounce-back win over the Raptors, piling up 45 points with 15 rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block. He did it with the kind of efficiency that has become his calling card, hitting 12 of 23 shots, knocking down eight of 12 from deep and going a perfect 13 for 13 at the line.

It was the 71st 40-point game of Doncics career, another reminder of how quickly he can take over a night when the Lakers need a jolt. And while the box score already told a big story, the game carried an extra edge around one tense sequence that helped fuel the emotion behind his latest standout performance. [Read more 🡒]

Luka Doncics Hot Streak Is Exposing A Bigger Lakers Problem

Luka Doncic has been carrying the Lakers offense through a recent stretch that has only sharpened the conversation around how much help he is getting. He has turned in several huge scoring nights lately, including a season-high 52 points against the Utah Jazz, and the Lakers have still gone just 1-2 over their last three games.

The bigger issue is starting to look familiar: beyond Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers have struggled to find reliable offensive support on a night-to-night basis. When Doncic is scoring at that level, the expectation is that the rest of the roster can at least help turn those performances into wins, but the recent results suggest that balance is still missing.
