LeBron James, a name synonymous with basketball greatness, has been a staple in the NBA for 23 years. Yet, as time marches on, even legends face the shifting dynamics of the game.
The Los Angeles Lakers, his current team, opted not to offer him a new contract last offseason. With Austin Reaves poised for a significant payday, it appears the Lakers might let LeBron explore free agency.
In the past, teams would have eagerly lined up for the chance to sign LeBron. However, according to NBA insider Ramona Shelburne, those days might be behind us.
Speaking on ESPN, Shelburne suggested that the hefty $50 million contracts LeBron once commanded may no longer be on the table. Instead, if he wishes to return to Los Angeles, it might require a considerable pay cut.
Shelburne noted, "The sense I have is that this idea of playing for $50M anywhere is probably gone, but if LeBron is willing to play for less, if that fits with what the Lakers are trying to do, I think that door is open."
The Lakers seem to be shifting their focus towards building around the promising duo of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. This means LeBron could find himself accepting a smaller role financially if he stays in Southern California. Shelburne added, "Right now, it's almost like he'd be reversing roles with Austin in terms of salary."
Reaves, currently earning $13.9 million with a player option for the next season, is expected to explore a new long-term deal, either with the Lakers or elsewhere. Meanwhile, LeBron is wrapping up the final year of his two-year, $101.3 million contract.
With career earnings surpassing $580 million and a net worth over a billion, financial security isn't a concern for LeBron. However, this situation highlights a new chapter in his storied career, where he may no longer be the league's undisputed top draw.
