For much of this season, the Lakers have been pegged as an offensive powerhouse, thanks to the dynamic trio of LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Austin Reaves. The expectation was clear: outscore opponents and ride that wave to success. But as the season has unfolded, something else has emerged-a defense that's starting to make waves of its own.
Recently, the Lakers have leaned more on their defensive prowess, especially against top-tier teams. Monday's clash with the Rockets was a prime example. In a game where neither offense could find its rhythm, the Lakers cranked up their defensive intensity, effectively shutting down Houston.
The Rockets struggled mightily in the fourth quarter, shooting a mere 4-16 from the field and coughing up the ball seven times. This defensive stand allowed the Lakers to overcome their own shooting woes, going 7-24, and secure a late victory.
J.J. Redick noted, “Defensively in the second half, the adjustments we made at halftime were executed exceptionally well, particularly in getting the ball out of Durant’s hands. It was a terrific defensive effort… You need a playoff mentality this time of year, and they showed that.”
"Playoff mentality" became the mantra postgame, and rightly so. The intensity and strategic play mirrored a postseason battle, which is significant given this matchup could preview a first-round showdown.
LeBron echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s like playoff basketball. Two playoff teams figuring out how to get a bucket while staying focused on both ends.
In playoff basketball, you can’t rely solely on offense. You have to buckle down and get stops.”
To thrive in the playoffs, versatility is key. The Lakers are proving they’re not a one-trick pony, showcasing a sustainable model of play.
Against the Rockets, they expertly doubled Kevin Durant, forcing him to give up the ball, and then quickly recovered to thwart any scoring attempts. Similarly, against the Nuggets, they effectively contained Nikola Jokić, disrupting his usual two-man game.
This commitment to game planning and execution is becoming the Lakers’ calling card. If they maintain this level of dedication, it could pay significant dividends come springtime.
