Lakers Still Have One Roster Problem To Solve Before Raptors Test

As the Raptors embark on their road trip, the Lakers' roster camaraderie and strategic vulnerabilities like rebounding and turnovers will be put to the test in a highly anticipated face-off.

The Toronto Raptors are opening a four-game road trip with a stop at Crypto.com Arena to face the Los Angeles Lakers, and the matchup comes with plenty of uncertainty on both sides.

To get a read on where the Lakers stand, Toronto Raptors On SI spoke with Los Angeles Lakers On SI publisher Ruan Ward, who pointed to a few clear pressure points for Los Angeles. The biggest concern, in his view, is what happens when Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are off the floor and the Lakers have to rely on Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes in the backcourt.

“It was concerning, for sure. I’m not worried about Sandro Mamukelashvili, but Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes have some concerning traits.”

Ward said both guards have had stretches that look shaky. He described Grimes as indecisive and Sexton as a bit of a wildcard who can make poor decisions. There’s still time for that to settle down, but he said the early returns haven’t looked good when the Lakers are forced to lean on them.

At the same time, Ward had a much more upbeat read on Sandro Mamukelashvili. He called him one of the team’s best additions so far and said the forward/center can do just about everything on the floor. He also believes Mamukelashvili isn’t being used enough by JJ Redick and his staff, and sees a path where he grows into the team’s sixth man and even enters the NBA Sixth Man of the Year conversation.

Ward also said the most surprising part of the Lakers’ start has been how quickly the group has come together with nine new players. In his view, that kind of early chemistry does not happen often. Even with the concerns around Sexton and Grimes, he believes the front office has assembled a strong roster that can be a force this season.

There are still holes, though. Ward said the Lakers remain thin in the frontcourt behind Kessler, with Kevon Looney having been unplayable. If they can find a backup big they can trust, he thinks the team will be in much better shape with Doncic driving things.

As for Sunday’s game against Toronto, Ward said rebounding and ball security could decide it. He pointed to the Lakers’ struggles on the glass and said they’ll need another big performance from Doncic if they want to get past the Raptors. Turnovers are another problem, especially from Austin Reaves lately, and Doncic has had issues there as well.

If Los Angeles can clean that up, Ward likes its chances. Still, he expects a tight one, similar to the game against the Portland Trail Blazers, and said it should be a hard-fought battle that goes down to the wire. He also noted that the Raptors remain dangerous even without Kawhi Leonard, and that Scottie Barnes looks locked in after scoring 41 against the Orlando Magic, which is why he sees this one as a game that could go either way.

Lakers Could Be Getting A Timely Boost As Rotation Questions Linger

The Lakers head into their matchup with the Raptors with at least one encouraging sign on the injury front, as rookie guard Cameron Carr is no longer listed on the teams report after working back from an oblique injury he picked up in the preseason. Carr, the No. 24 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, had already made a strong impression in Summer League and in preseason action, which is part of why his availability matters as the Lakers continue sorting through the edges of their rotation.

Ziaire Williams is still listed as questionable because of a left foot injury, while Adou Thiero remains out with a knee issue, leaving the Lakers with a few moving parts to manage. For a team trying to stabilize its depth early, Carrs return gives the staff another option to consider, even if the bigger picture around minutes and roles is still taking shape. [Read more 🡒]

Robert Horrys Legacy Just Reignited A Hall Of Fame Debate

James Worthy has put his weight behind a familiar Lakers debate, making a strong case for Robert Horrys place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Coming from a Hall of Famer and franchise icon, the endorsement carries real weight, especially for a player whose career was built less on individual hardware and more on winning at the highest level. Horrys seven championships remain the centerpiece of the argument, along with the reputation he built as one of the leagues most reliable clutch performers.

Robert Horrys resume has always invited a split reaction because it does not look like the typical Hall of Fame path. He never made an All-Star team and never won a Finals MVP, yet his value to championship teams was obvious to anyone who watched him in big moments. Worthys support has only sharpened the conversation, and it leaves the question hanging in a way Lakers fans know well: how much should impact on winning matter when the individual honors are thin? Lakers Present A Brutal Test For Scottie Barnes And The Raptors

The Raptors head into their matchup with the Lakers trying to steady themselves after a loss to Orlando, and the spotlight quickly turns to how Toronto handles a very different kind of challenge. Scottie Barnes has been one of the brighter spots lately, giving the Raptors a strong two-way presence, while RJ Barrett remains an important part of the offense as Toronto looks to get back on track against a Los Angeles team that can punish mistakes in a hurry.

The toughest assignment in front of Toronto is the one waiting on the other side, with Luka Doncic forcing defenses to make decisions all night and stretching the game in ways few players can. For the Raptors, the issue is not just slowing down the Lakers star power, but also getting enough from Barnes and Barrett to keep the game from slipping away early, especially after Barretts uneven showing in the last outing.
