Lakers Still Face One Big Question In Their Search For Luka Help

The Los Angeles Lakers are eyeing a blockbuster four-team deal that could see Jarred Vanderbilt traded for Klay Thompson, enhancing their playoff prospects with a seasoned champion.

The Lakers are still active on the move front as they try to keep shaping the roster around Luka Doncic before the season starts, and one of the names hanging around the conversation is a familiar one: Klay Thompson.

Los Angeles has already added several new pieces this summer, but the work does not appear finished. Thompson has been tied to the Lakers for a while now, and according to The Athletic’s Christian Clark, there is at least some interest on his side as well.

“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.

Thompson’s situation with the Dallas Mavericks has become one of the more closely watched storylines of the summer. Dallas is weighing whether to trade him or eventually reach a buyout, while Thompson has made his priorities plain: he wants a shot at another title run.

“I want to compete for a Championship, not necessarily win one, but just have the chance to go and try and get another one… I want to play a role on a team that I want to make a deep playoff run,” Thompson said.

If the Lakers decided to pursue him, they may need help from other teams to make the money work. Heavy.com’s Adel Ahmad floated a four-team deal that would bring Thompson to Los Angeles and send Jarred Vanderbilt out of town.

“Lakers receive: Klay Thompson and a 2031 second round pick (via POR). Mavs receive: Vit Crejci and a 2031 second round pick (via LAL).

Trail Blazers receive: Jarred Vanderbilt and Moritz Wagner. Nets receive: Robert Williams,” Ahmad wrote.

In that setup, the Lakers would get the kind of perimeter shooting that could open things up for Doncic, while also adding a player with championship experience. Los Angeles has been looking for another dependable scorer and shooter to pair with Doncic and Austin Reaves, and Thompson fits that bill.

The other part of the equation is Vanderbilt’s contract, which the Lakers would finally move off in this scenario. For a team still trying to finish its offseason business, a deal like that would check a lot of boxes at once.

Lakers Still Have One Big Roster Question Behind Luka Doncic

The Lakers have already made some notable offseason additions, bringing in Walker Kessler and signing Kevon Looney, but the front office still appears to be working through one of the clearest roster questions left on the board. With Luka Doncic anchoring the conversation around the teams future, the search for more frontcourt size has become part of the bigger roster picture, and league chatter suggests Los Angeles is still checking on available big men.

For now, the focus is on options rather than final answers. The Lakers are being linked to the market for another center, whether that comes through a trade or a signing, and the name to watch has been a familiar one in recent speculation. Until the team makes a move, though, the position remains one of the few spots where the roster still feels unfinished. [Read more 🡒]

Luka Doncic Made One Opponent Regret Chirping At Him

Rookie Matas Buzelis ended up with a quick lesson in why trash talk can backfire when it reaches Luka Doncic in the middle of a game. The Bulls forward spoke about the moment on the Cousins show with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, recalling how he chirped at Doncic only to see the Lakers star respond by taking over the matchup and making the exchange feel one-sided in a hurry.

Buzelis said the experience showed how hard it is to keep talking while also backing it up on the floor, even against a player as polished as Doncic. He did not sound interested in changing his approach, though, making clear that his assertive style is part of who he is, which suggests this kind of back-and-forth could come up again the next time he shares a court with one of the leagues toughest competitors. Lakers Just Got A Better Shot At Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kumingas free agency picture tightened again after the five-team deal that sent Peyton Watson from Denver to Cleveland. The move matters beyond the immediate trade pieces because it reshapes the market around one of the summers more watched young forwards, and it gives the Lakers a clearer sense of who they are really bidding against as the negotiations drag on.

For Los Angeles, the opening is simple enough: fewer teams in the mix can only help as the front office weighs salary-cap math and trade assets against the kind of upside Kuminga brings. The chase is still unsettled, and the Lakers know they are not alone in it, but the landscape around the former first-rounder looks a little more favorable than it did before the Nuggets trade set off the latest round of movement.
