Dalton Knecht’s place with the Lakers is suddenly looking shaky, and JJ Redick didn’t exactly ease the tension.
Los Angeles is still sorting through its roster crunch for the upcoming season after a busy offseason left the team with more bodies than spots. That has put real pressure on a few players, and analyst Trevor Lane thinks Knecht is the one most in danger.
“My assumption is that if they had to make a decision right now, they would not pick up the $6.4 million team-option on Dalton Knecht. He's got between now and Halloween to change their mind," Lane said.
That’s a tough spot for a former first-round pick who is heading into his third season already fighting uphill. Knecht knows the situation, too. His role has already taken a major hit since his rookie year, when he started games, to his second season, when his minutes dried up.
Still, he’s talking like a player who understands the opportunity in front of him.
“It’s a whole new opportunity for all of us,” Knecht said. “Like [coach] JJ [Redick] said, there’s a lot of minutes open.”
Redick’s comments didn’t sound like a coach making promises. They sounded like a coach describing a player who has to earn his way back into the picture.
“First of all, he's been a pro. He's been in the gym.
Like he has since Day 1, he has worked his butt off all offseason. And he's had a good three days of practice.
So I don't think his approach changes. I know he's hungry to play and hungry to earn a spot in the rotation,” Redick said.
That kind of praise can be telling. When a coach is talking about someone as a pro while also stressing the need to earn rotation minutes, it usually means nothing is guaranteed.
Knecht may still have time to shift the conversation, but right now the signs point in one direction. If the Lakers move on, it would open the door for him to find a team that values him more. At the moment, though, Los Angeles doesn’t seem to view him the same way it did not long ago.

Lakers May Have Found A Cheap Answer To A Real Problem
The Lakers spent the offseason looking for low-cost ways to shore up a roster that has long had to balance offensive firepower with enough defense to survive the grind of a season. One of the more intriguing additions is Matisse Thybulle, who arrived on a veteran minimum deal and brings the kind of defensive reputation that has made him a useful piece whenever his body has cooperated.
JJ Redick has already pointed to Thybulle as a valuable defender when healthy, which is the key part of the equation in Los Angeles. Thybulle, for his part, sounded energized by the opportunity to play alongside teammates including Walker Kessler, saying that kind of presence should help him be more aggressive on that end. For a team searching for a cheap answer to a very real problem, the fit is easy to understand, even if the bigger test still lies ahead. [Read more 🡒]
Luka Doncic Is Giving Lakers Fans A New Reason To Believe
Luka Doncics latest offseason transformation has become one of the bigger talking points around the Lakers as they head toward the 2026-27 season. NBA insiders Brian Windhorst, Tim McMahon and Dave McMenamin all noted the same thing on recent discussion, while the teams Media Day posts helped amplify the visual: Doncic looks leaner and more muscular than he has in past years. For a Lakers team that is always measured against championship expectations, any sign that their star guard is arriving in better shape naturally gets attention.
The bigger reason it matters is not just the optics. A stronger, slimmer Doncic suggests a player who could be better equipped to handle the grind of a long season, and that has obvious appeal for a roster that will lean heavily on his production and presence. Lakers fans have spent plenty of time waiting for reasons to buy into the next step, and this is the kind of development that can make the buildup around training camp feel a little different than usual. Lakers Just Raised The Stakes On Luka Doncic
The Lakers offseason makeover has already changed the tone around the franchise, and Augusts sale only added another layer of intrigue to what comes next. Luka Doncic has made it clear he is excited about being in Los Angeles and about working under the new management, a sign that the relationship is starting with real optimism even before the season gets rolling.
Rob Pelinka has said Doncic is focused strictly on basketball, which is exactly what the Lakers want to hear as they try to turn all the organizational change into on-court momentum. Still, ESPNs Tim MacMahon noted that Doncic may be feeling a sharper championship push as he nears 28, which is the kind of pressure that can define a season in Los Angeles if the early promise does not quickly turn into results.
