The Lakers’ record-setting ownership sale is going to take a little longer to clear the league office.
Mark Walter, who held the majority stake after just 14 months of ownership, has agreed to sell the Los Angeles Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for $12.5 billion, a stunning twist for one of the NBA’s most recognizable franchises. But even with both sides on board, the deal still needs approval from the NBA board of governors.
That approval won’t be part of next week’s board meeting, according to Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the L.A. Times.
The ownership picture is even messier because the Buss family also agreed to sell its remaining 17.8 percent stake. Jeanie Buss, though, is opposing her siblings’ decision, which has turned the situation into a legal fight.
Her petition to block the sale of her family’s share is now scheduled for Dec. 8 in court. It had originally been set for Nov. 5, but a continuance was granted because of a scheduling conflict.
While all of that plays out, the Lakers have kept moving on the basketball side of the operation. In May, the team added Rohan Ramadas as one of two assistant general managers under longtime GM Rob Pelinka, with Ramadas handling strategy and data systems.
After that, the front office added another piece in Eric Amsler, who came over from the Miami Heat and will focus on player personnel.
The Lakers still weren’t finished. They’ve since hired Keith D’Amelio as director of integrated performance systems. D’Amelio’s background includes stops with the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and the WNBA’s New York Liberty, along with a stint at Nike.
So even with a new ownership situation full of questions, the Lakers are continuing to reshape the front office as they look ahead to the 2026-27 NBA season.
