Lakers Opening Night Lineup Battle Just Got A Lot More Interesting

The Lakers' potential starting lineup for the new season features unexpected choices that could redefine their strategic gameplay.

John Ireland thinks the Lakers’ opening-night puzzle is basically solved.

On ESPN LA 710, the Lakers broadcaster projected a starting five that pairs Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler with Quentin Grimes and Ziaire Williams. Ireland said Grimes is a lock next to Doncic, Reaves and Kessler, and added that he had heard through “back channels” that Williams will be the fifth starter.

That would give the Lakers a clean answer to the two spots they brought into training camp as open competitions. JJ Redick had already labeled Doncic, Reaves and Kessler as the established starters, while the other positions were left for the group to sort out.

Ireland’s projected lineup looks like this:

Point guard: Luka Doncic
Shooting guard: Austin Reaves

Small forward: Quentin Grimes
Power forward: Ziaire Williams

Center: Walker Kessler

The biggest call there is Williams, who would slide into the unsettled forward spot ahead of Jake LaRavia, Sandro Mamukelashvili or another contender. Grimes would handle the other wing spot alongside Doncic and Reaves, with Kessler anchored in the middle.

It’s worth stressing that this is Ireland’s projection, not a formal announcement from Redick. Still, it does put a potential first unit on the board as the regular season gets closer.

Williams’ status only makes the conversation more interesting. His preseason was interrupted by a foot issue, but Redick said Thursday that Williams had fully participated in practice. Williams also said the final call on his return would come from the medical staff.

“Good. It’s up to the staff now,” Williams said.

“I’m in good hands. They’ve been taking care of me.

See how we feel. But yeah, it’s up to them.

I’m ready to go as long as they say I am.”

That doesn’t lock him into the starting five, but it does give the projection some real weight.

Redick also noted that the Lakers have had more time to build between games this preseason, saying the team expected to finish with 12 preseason practices, compared with six last year. Those extra sessions have helped the staff install its system even with injuries cutting into game-to-game evaluation.

So for now, Ireland’s read is clear: Grimes and Williams in the first unit. Whether Redick makes the same call is the part to watch.

Lakers Get A Different Warriors Test Than Anyone Expected Opening Night

The Lakers are about to get a very different kind of opening-night look from the Warriors than they might have expected a few months ago. Golden State spent the offseason adding veteran help in Brandon Williams and Georges Niang on one-year deals, and head coach Steve Kerr has already confirmed both will be on the roster and in the rotation when the season opens.

For Los Angeles, that matters because the Warriors are trying to shore up their second unit while injuries have thinned out parts of the lineup. Charles Bassey is also slated to be in that opener rotation, giving Golden State a deeper and more experienced bench group than the Lakers may have been preparing for when the schedule first came out. Lakers Are Fueling A Bronny Debate They Can't Ignore

Bronny James remains a point of discussion around the Lakers as the organization reportedly stays optimistic about his long-term development and intends to keep him on the roster even after LeBron James move to Philadelphia. For a team that has spent plenty of time trying to balance immediate expectations with future planning, Bronnys place in the picture is getting harder to overlook, especially with his role still taking shape.

The on-court case has not helped quiet the debate. Bronny has had a tough time making a noticeable impact through his first two NBA seasons, and his preseason play has done little to change the conversation. Some fans are now wondering whether the Lakers continued belief in him is being driven as much by marketing appeal as by actual production, leaving the team with a storyline it can no longer shrug off. Lakers Still Have A Roster Decision Hanging Over Luka's New Core

The Lakers have already made the biggest pivot of the post-LeBron era, reshaping the roster around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as they look ahead to the 2026-27 season. With several new faces in place and a 53-29 finish still fresh in the backdrop, the organization is clearly treating this next stretch as the beginning of a different identity, one built less around legacy and more around what this new core can become.

Even with that direction set, there is still unfinished business on the roster. NBA insider Brett Siegel reported the Lakers are exploring trade options for Jarred Vanderbilt and Dalton Knecht, with Knecht viewed as unlikely to be part of the long-term picture, leaving at least one more decision hanging over a group that is otherwise trying to settle in before preseason and the regular season arrive.
