The Los Angeles Lakers pushed themselves into a roster squeeze this summer, and Dalton Knecht ended up paying the price.
After a flurry of moves left the Lakers over the limit, Knecht had long looked like the likeliest odd man out. That picture only got clearer once training camp rolled around and the roster math turned unfavorable.
Lakers coach JJ Redick pointed to the way the team evolved as the reason Knecht was suddenly in a tough spot.
“I think the biggest thing is the team changed. The team changed.
Needs changed, the fit changed. I think he's gotten better as a player the last two years.
I think, particularly last year, each guy got plenty of opportunities with the injuries we had. I just think coming into this year, we added a lot of wings and he's in a tough spot right now," Redick said.
The Lakers eventually made it official earlier in the week, waiving the 2024 first-rounder to get their roster down to the required limit. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the move this way: “The Los Angeles Lakers are waiving 2024 No. 17 pick Dalton Knecht, sources tell ESPN,”
Now the question is where Knecht lands next, and one prediction has him heading to Philadelphia.
Wynton Jackson of Knox News believes the 76ers could sign Knecht to a two-way contract, giving him a new runway after his rough spell in Los Angeles. Jackson also tied the idea to LeBron James, noting that James is now with the 76ers for one last title run before he retires.
“Early in Knecht's rookie year with the Lakers, he erupted for 37 points in a win over the Utah Jazz. His teammate, LeBron James, famously criticized opposing NBA teams for allowing the Lakers to draft Knecht at No.
- James is now with the Philadelphia 76ers for one last title run before he retires.
The Sixers have a deeper roster and championship aspirations. However, it's unlikely that James, 41, and the oft-injured 2023 MVP Joel Embiid will play the entire 82-game regular season schedule.
Philadelphia could take a flier on Knecht to step in when its two superstars rest, and his shooting ability could swing a playoff game,” Jackson wrote.
Knecht didn’t get a clean break in Los Angeles, but a new landing spot could change the conversation fast. Philadelphia’s top group would be a hard one to crack, yet there would still be chances for him to prove himself when the roster thins out. For a player trying to show he belongs in the league, that matters.

Luka Already Has A Lakers Problem Warriors Fans Will Notice
Luka Doncics first run in a Lakers uniform already gave a glimpse of why his arrival has been such a big deal, and why it could also come with some familiar headaches. In his debut, he picked up a technical foul during the preseason, a small moment that still stood out because the Lakers are counting on him not just for offense, but for steady leadership from day one.
Doncic has made it clear he wants to lead the team and be available every game this season, which only raises the stakes around the one habit that has followed him at times throughout his career. He has a history of arguing with officials, and that was part of how he once wound up suspended after crossing the technical foul limit, so keeping that edge in check figures to matter as much in Los Angeles as anything he does with the ball. Lakers Suddenly Have A Jake LaRavia Question Fans Werent Expecting
The Lakers opened their season with a win over the Warriors, and one of the more encouraging developments came from Jake LaRavia, who looked comfortable in his role before the game took a concerning turn late in the fourth quarter. For a team trying to settle into the first real week of the season, LaRavias energy and production offered an early reason for optimism beyond the result itself.
Late in the game, though, LaRavia appeared to suffer an ankle injury, a reminder of how quickly a strong first impression can become a bigger roster question. Postgame, JJ Redick gave an encouraging update on LaRavias condition, which at least softened the immediate worry for a Lakers team that would prefer to keep one of its early bright spots on the floor. Luka Doncic Just Got A Brutal Reminder Of Lakers Pressure
The Lakers will open the 2026-27 season against the Warriors, setting up a familiar kind of spotlight for a team that rarely gets to ease into anything. It is a rematch of the previous seasons opener, only this time the center of gravity in Los Angeles is different, with Luka Doncic now carrying the franchise after LeBron James departure.
And with the season still ahead, Doncic already has a new layer of scrutiny attached to him. Draymond Green, speaking on his podcast, said he does not believe Doncic will ever win an NBA MVP award, a sharp challenge for a player who has been in the mix as a top contender and is now expected to guide the Lakers toward a championship run.
