Lakers Just Lost A Trusted Piece In The Most Painful Way

Rui Hachimura's strategic move to the Clippers sees him secure a significant role and lucrative contract while closing the curtain on his impactful tenure with the Lakers.

Rui Hachimura’s time with the Lakers is over, and he’s staying in Los Angeles - just not with the team he’s been wearing for the last four years.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Hachimura has agreed to a two-year, $28 million deal with the Clippers, closing the book on a run that made him one of the Lakers’ most dependable role players. The move had been building for a while.

Hachimura and his agent, Darren Matsubara of THE•TEAM, had an understanding with the Clippers when free agency opened, with the hope that a sign-and-trade with the Lakers could be worked out. That never happened.

The two sides waited while the Lakers handled other business, but Los Angeles ultimately chose not to help facilitate a sign-and-trade. That left the Clippers to land Hachimura outright.

For the Lakers, it’s a significant departure during an offseason that has already brought major change. Hachimura had carved out a valuable role over his four seasons in Los Angeles, averaging 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists while shooting 51.6% from the field and 41.5% from three-point range.

His last season was his most efficient. He put up 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, shot 51.4% overall and 44.3% from deep, and remained one of the Lakers’ most reliable floor spacers. He also built a close bond with Luka Doncic after Doncic arrived in 2025.

Keeping Hachimura would have been the Lakers’ preference, but the math never really worked. After their offseason additions, they were left with a little over $2 million in cap space.

They would have liked to move Jarred Vanderbilt’s contract to make room, but no salary dump materialized. Matching the Clippers’ offer simply wasn’t realistic.

The Clippers, meanwhile, made a clean addition. Hachimura is expected to fill the starting power forward spot, bringing efficient shooting and versatility on defense. He also gets to remain in the city where he wanted to be all along.

For Lakers fans, it’s the end of a chapter that may not have been flashy, but mattered. Hachimura was never the loudest name in the room, yet he became the kind of player a team leans on. Now he’ll do it across town at the Intuit Dome.

Luka Just Gave Lakers Fans A New Reason To Revisit LeBrons Exit

Luka Doncics latest rapid-fire interview offered a reminder of just how naturally his basketball mind gravitates toward Nikola Jokic. The Lakers star kept leaning into the Nuggets center when asked to make quick two-on-two choices, a reflection of the close bond and ongoing banter the two share, and a small but telling glimpse into the kind of player Doncic seems to value most.

The final stretch of the segment only added to the intrigue, with Doncic moving on to Larry Bird and then Michael Jordan in his last picks. For Lakers fans, the bigger takeaway is what this says about the teams new center of gravity after LeBron James offseason departure, because every Doncic answer now feels like part of the bigger conversation about where the franchise is headed next. Lakers May Be Backing Off Kuminga For A Stunning Veteran Pivot

With LeBron James moving on, the Lakers have been able to lean fully into an offseason plan built around Luka Doncic, and they have already started reshaping the roster with the trade for Walker Kessler and a handful of free-agent additions. Even with those moves in place, the front office has kept its attention on Jonathan Kuminga, whose fit as a young, athletic wing still makes him one of the more intriguing names on their board.

The catch is that the Lakers may not want to wait forever if the Kuminga pursuit stalls. One league source has suggested the team is at least considering a veteran pivot, and that would shift the conversation from upside and long-term fit to a more immediate, established option on the wing. For a team trying to balance urgency with flexibility around Doncic, that kind of fallback could say plenty about how the rest of the summer is likely to unfold. [Read more 🡒]

Lakers Linked To Rare Wing Target They Almost Never Can Land

The Lakers are once again being tied to a wing who checks a lot of boxes, and that alone makes the rumor worth watching. Bleacher Reports speculation around Trey Murphy points to the kind of player Los Angeles rarely gets a clean shot at: a big, versatile wing who can space the floor, hold up defensively and add some juice as a finisher around the rim.

Murphys appeal goes beyond the usual trade chatter because he fits the exact sort of roster need the Lakers keep circling back to. He also comes with a sizable commitment still left on his deal over the next three seasons, which helps explain why any serious pursuit would be complicated, and why this could become more than just another name floating through the rumor mill.
